✟
❀
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Reinhold Karl of Foremost, Alberta. Reinhold passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa in Lethbridge, AB on Tuesday August 12 at the age of 93. He was surrounded by his loving family, including his beloved wife of 67 years, Isobel Karl.
Reinhold was born on February 25 in Birdsholm AB, the fifth child to Carl and Katherine Karl. He was born and raised on the farm south of Foremost and graduated from Foremost High School and then started his working career with the Royal Bank. Reinhold would soon return to Foremost and begin a 27-year career as a grain buyer for UGG that lasted until his retirement in 1988. Reinhold truly loved farming and pursued this passion first while working at UGG and then again later in retirement when he and Tim worked the farm together from 1982 until 2010. There was nothing as fulfilling to him as working the land, be it in the field or Tim and Sandy’s large garden.
Reinhold was very active in the Foremost community, participating and coaching many sports. Reinhold also loved the theatre and was cast in Fiddler on the Roof. He was an active member of the Lutheran Church and was a member of a number of service clubs, most notably Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club. Reinhold was a proud, long-standing member of the Foremost Golf Club. He served as Mayor of Foremost from 1969 to 1973, and oversaw the opening of the reservoir. Reinhold could always be counted on to coordinate the crew and to flip his share of pancakes for breakfast on rodeo weekend. Reinhold was the person who could be depended on to fill any role, including those in leadership, but there was no job too big or too small for him to tackle.
After retirement, Reinhold and Isobel spent many winters in Arizona with friends who became like family to them, staying in contact to this day. Reinhold had a wonderful sense of humour and was always ready with a quick quip. Reinhold had a great love of music and could sing a relevant tune for any occasion and certainly loved to dance, especially a good polka. Reinhold lived with the belief that there were no strangers, just friends he hadn’t made yet.
Reinhold was not only a loving husband but a dedicated and caring father, grandfather, and brother. Reinhold was always a great supporter of all of his children and grandchildren’s activities and could be counted on to be at any and all sporting events, concerts and recitals. Besides his loving wife Isobel, Reinhold is survived by daughter Frances Thorson and children Garrett Thorson (Danielle Larose), Amy Caufield (Greg), Craig Thorson; daughter-in-law Sandy Karl and children Cassy Karl (Phil Mercer), Corbin Karl (Cindy Ruiz) and their children (great-grand children Lukas and Luna); daughter Leslie Larson (Kyle), and children Karly Lecavalier (Sarah), Kaylin Larson (Kaden Hanas) and Justine Larson (George Kahlben).
Reinhold is also survived by his sisters Irene Lynes, Kate Black, Doris Wolfe and Pauline Hougen and brother George Karl. Reinhold was predeceased by his parents Carl and Katherine, brothers Floyd and Ernie, son Tim, and son-in-law Gerry Thorson.
The family would like to extend our thanks to the doctors and nurses of Unit 3A, and the palliative care team of Dr Walters and Waller, as well as the excellent staff of 2W at St Therese. We will be eternally grateful for the love and care you gave to Mom and Dad in his final days.
A Service will be held on Saturday August 30, 2025 at 1pm at the Foremost Community Hall, Pastor Carolyn Langford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Foremost Golf Club. Cheques may be mailed to: Foremost Golf Club, Box 382, Foremost AB T0K 0X0; or you may send an e-transfer to 4mostgolf@gmail.com , just put R Karl memorial in the Message section.
JoAnn Meisser

✟
❀
After a long and fulfilling life, JoAnn Meisser passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025 at the age of 94 years.
JoAnn was born April 15, 1931 in Payette, Idaho, just across the state border from her family’s home in Ontario, Oregon. When she was two years old, she moved to Southern Alberta with her parents, Harold and Mabel Hutchinson and her older siblings, Leta Mae and Howard. The family lived and farmed east of Warner until JoAnn was starting junior high school, at which time they moved into the town of Warner. She moved to Corvallis, Oregon for her grade twelve year, then enrolled at Oregon State College in Corvallis as a Home Economics major. JoAnn left college after two years and moved back to Alberta to get married, settling in Lethbridge. She raised her four children there and considered the city her home for the rest of her life, no matter where else she lived.
JoAnn was the ultimate stay-at-home Mom for most of her kids’ childhood. She was an excellent cook and baker and was known for a number of specialties, notably her rhubarb and strawberry pie! She was also an accomplished seamstress, knitter, and quilter. Each one of her great-grandchildren treasure the personalized baby quilt they were gifted at birth.
When her children were mostly grown, JoAnn rejoined the workforce. She worked for others, both in gift shops and as the manager of the Waterton Natural History Association. During her time with the WNHA, Mom was the driving force behind having a memorial wall erected in the Waterton Cemetery so people who loved the Park could have plaques with their names added to the wall. In 1994, she opened Evergreen Gifts in Waterton Park, which she owned and operated for several years. She had a long history with Waterton, being employed there in the summers from the time she was just fourteen years old. It was one of her two favourite places in the world. She taught her kids to fish and hike there, and she bought us endless booklets of red and green swim tickets for admission to the swimming pool across the street (although she never did learn to swim!). Countless precious memories were created at the family cabin. Mom’s other happy place was Palm Springs, where she enjoyed spending her winters. Everyone who visited her in the desert eventually got introduced to the Sunday afternoon jazz jam at Melvyn’s! She also loved to travel to other countries; quite a few destinations were crossed off her bucket list in her senior years.
JoAnn is survived by her children Tom (Wendy) Paterson, Jane Paterson (Jay Barsky), Doug (Valerie) Paterson and Allister (Lynn) Paterson, her nine grandchildren, Wes Paterson, Michael Paterson, Shauna Blenkin, Dan Jacob, Katherine Pickering, Molly Pilchar, Wade Paterson, Nikki Paterson and Cory Paterson, eighteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
We would like to express our appreciation to The Manor Village Garrison Woods for giving our Mom a wonderful home for almost six years, and to the staff at Intercare Southwood Care Centre, Bonavista West for their compassionate care over the past year and a half.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Waterton Foundation through canadahelps.org or to the charity of your choice.
Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2026 in Waterton.

He passed on peacefully while surrounded by family on July, 29, 2025. Samakiinaa, a spirit full of life, has returned home. He has travelled full circle. He will be forever missed by all those that knew him.
Samakiinaa was born to Cecile Prairie Chicken and James Provost, on July 02, 1963, he was from the Tall People Clan. Being youngest of five siblings, he was the adored baby to his mother and the cherished baby brother to Wilma (Wayne) Spear Chief-Morris and Moses Spear Chief (Shelly Pompana) and the Late; Isabel Heavy Shields, Raymond Black Water, Cecile Yellow Wings, and Elizabeth (Leo) Day Chief. His household included his nieces, he was the loving uncle to Tammy Heavy Shields, the late Ramona Heavy Shields, Renee (Winston) Day Chief, the late Dorothy Mae Spear Chief, Trina (Marvin) Many Fingers and Roxann Scout, all who were raised alongside him. Julius spoke proudly of his Harvard Lawyer nephew, Julian Spear Chief-Morris and professional athlete niece, Joy Spear Chief-Morris. He was of Catholic faith and was an Altar boy in his early childhood. In his teens, he owned a motor bike and was part of a ‘motor cycle gang’ and early on began repairing his own vehicles.
Julius was raised by his mother within the community of Standoff townsite, Cecile modelled hard work and instilled her own traditional values. She was the proud granddaughter of the ‘original’ Samakiinaa, who raised Cecile in the community of Aakaksimaaks (Old Agency). She often remarked of the power to Julius’s name and retold the story of how one day her grandfather Samakiinaa said he said he was going to Calgary and shake hands with the British Crown who were scheduled for a visit in May of 1939. Family remarked to him that the King and Queen’s visit will be under tight security and shaking hands with them will be impossible. However, Samakiinaa began to prepare for his trip, assembling his finest attire he travelled to Calgary. He successfully crossed security barriers and walked directly to the King and Queen and indeed shook their hands and even conversed with them.
Julius proudly carried his namesake of his great grandfather’s name Samakiinaa throughout his lifetime.
Cecile stood by her son Julius through all his endeavours. His childhood included his love of sports; he played minor hockey with the Farm Four Oilers and then Kainai Chiefs and later recreational hockey with Lethbridge Community College. His nieces proudly took turns carrying his hockey bag, as they escorted Julius to every hockey practice and hockey game walking from their house in upper Townsite to the Kainai Sports Center, no matter how freezing cold the winter weather. Julius fondly recalls Dorothy Mae who always fiercely protected him should any of his hockey contenders roughed him up in a game. Dorothy Mae was sure to wait to pounce on his aggressor after the game. As a teenager, he was involved in Track and Field, he played basketball with the Farm Four Cyclones, also playing high calibre Fast ball. Julius proudly returned home to his mother with his gold medals and MVP awards. Also in his teens, he had a motor bike and was part of a ‘motor cycle gang’ and very early began to repair his own vehicles. In 1978, he received the Blood Tribe Junior Athlete of the Year Award, and in later years he played golf and joined the Pool league, once earning a spot at the Las Vegas Pool Tournament. He was a loyal Calgary Flames fan.
He graduated from F.P. Walshe in 1981, and then graduated from Lethbridge Community College in 1988, having completed the Civil Engineering Technology Program in Construction and Management. In 1987, he met the love of his life, Cheryl, and were united for 37 years, together they built a stable loving home for their children and grandchildren. He was strong and independent and took pride in all his accomplishments, he worked hard throughout his lifetime providing for his family. He had outstanding work ethic having worked numerous jobs within Blood Tribe, his most recent employment was as Manager of Maintenance and Security for Blood Tribe. Julius was a loving father and grandfather, and shared a close relationship with his daughter-in-law, Cianna, along with sisters; Sandra (Chris) Shade and MaryAnne Buckskin. He was a family man travelling all over with Cheryl and their children to race meets, hockey with Kai and yearly camps at Aakokatsin.
Continuing to carry out his mother’s influence, in 1990, Julius joined the Pokootskinayiiks (the Young Horn society) with his partners John J. Healy and Rita Day Rider. Together they owned Miiniksapapistaatsiss (Angry Aggressive Spear Staff). He also joined the Kaanottsoomitaaks (Brave Dog Society) with his true love Cheryl. He loved this way of life and being part of Aakokatsin, he finished out his life as an Elder. He was integral to the lives of his family and will be forever missed by his little man Kai. Julius had a close relationship with his No Runner family the loss is deeply felt by his brothers, Tom, Delvin, Calvin, Clayton, Lane and Shane.
Being adept with horses, Julius pursued for many years Horse Racing and stood numerous times in the Winners circle. Julius proudly recalled when he and Uncle Don No Runner and the boys travelled two and a half hours to Millarville, Alberta’sracetrack for their annual Canada Day celebrations. Arriving late at the racetrack due to heavy traffic, they frantically rushed and assisted one another in preparing their horses scheduled to run intwo separate races. At the end of the day, they walked away proudly winning each of their respective races. He lived a very full life until he succumbed to prolonged illness due to an unfortunate work injury that marked the decline in his health. He had always hoped he could return to work but sadly, it was not meant to be. Julius leaves behind a void in the lives of loved ones he touched through his family, his ceremonial way of life and the many close friendships he forged throughout his lifetime. He will be remembered for his piercing blue eyes sparkling mischievously, and he was so witty, and spoke fluent Blackfoot. He was always teasing his sisters-in-law.
