Official Obituary of

7/5/1917 - to - 31/3/2007

DR. GERALD A. WRIGHT of Lethbridge passed away on March 31, 2007 at the age of 89 years.

Gerald was born on May 7, 1917 and raised in Brecon, South Wales, U.K. In 1938 he obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Wales in Cardiff. In 1941 he graduated M.B.,B.Ch. (Wales). In 1946 he studied for and obtained the M.B., B.S. (London). In 1948 he achieved the M.R.C.P. (London). In 1953 he was recognized as a Medical Specialist in Canada. In 1972 he was awarded the F.R.C.P. (Canada). During World War II Gerald served in the British Army in the R.A.M.C. from 1942 to 1946 in North Africa and Italy. In 1951 Gerald immigrated to Canada, coming to Lethbridge. This was a result of an advertisement by the Hunt Clinic in the British Medical Journal. He measured the distance of Lethbridge from the Rocky Mountains and since it was to his satisfaction he made the move. As a member of the Hunt Clinic he worked as an anesthetist and maintained a general practice. He was also trained as a Specialist in Internal Medicine. He served as Chief of Medicine at St. Michael's Hospital and the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital. He retired in 1988.

Shortly after arriving in Canada he joined the Alpine Club of Canada. He attended many of their summer camps, frequently as camp doctor. In celebration of Canada's Centennial year he was a member of the Alpine Centennial Expedition that took place in the St. Elias Mountains, Yukon Territory. He was camp doctor and member of the Alberta Team who where successful in their ascent of Mount Alberta (out 23 hours). In 1968, he trekked in Nepal in the Annapurna region. In 1969, with the Alpine Club of Canada he successfully climbed Mt. Waddington the highest peak in the Coast Range of British Columbia. On his third attempt he reached the summit of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, earlier attempts were abandoned due to heavy snowfalls. Gerry climbed in the Switzerland, reaching the summits of the Eiger and the Matterhorn. He climbed in South America, Mount Huantsan in Peru and Mount Cook in New Zealand. Gerry was an early member of the local Chinook Outdoor Club. He enjoyed many years of climbing and hiking in the Rockies and foothills with this group. Waterton was a favourite destination.Gerald was a member of and attended summer camps with the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. Gerry was a founding member of the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition; he was on the Board of Directors and for many years enjoyed planning their hike schedules, often leading hikes. On several occasions he enjoyed week long back country trips frequently traveling on horseback. Gerald truly enjoyed map reading, squash, table tennis, tennis, skiing, sailing, photography, music, playing bridge, birding, wild flower identification and reading. Gerald was known for his good-natured humour, his understatement, his unflappability in even the most dangerous situations, his spirit of adventure, and his love and respect for the natural world and in particular his passion for the mountains. He was a conservationist. He enriched many lives. He will be missed.

He is survived by Marion (nee Flett), his loving and devoted wife of twenty-five years. Also by three children Adrian (Brenda) Wright of Delta, B.C., James Wright (Grant) of Vancouver, B.C., Jane Wright (Mike) of Ladysmith, B.C., one grandson Steven (Michelle) Wright of Delta, B.C. and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Leslie Wright and his former wife Isobel Wright.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, April 5, 2007 on at the GALT MUSEUM, 320 - 5 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB. No Flowers.
