Agi Wolosiuk

Official Obituary of

15/8/1914 - to - 19/8/2010

Agiej (Agi) Wolosiuk beloved husband of the late Margaret Wolosiuk and the dad of Helen Kloepper, Diane Pommen and Ken Wolosiuk passed away at Edith Cavell on Thursday August 19, 2010 at the age of 96.

Agi was born on August 15, 1914 in Juchnowce, Poland to Antoni and Maria. As a young man, he worked as a stoker and then at the age of 18 joined the army reserves. While in the reserves, World War II broke out and he was then deported to the USSR in 1940. Once Russia allied with Great Britain, he continued to serve with the Polish Forces who were now under British command. From 1942 to 1946 Agi served in the Middle East, Italy and Great Britain as a tank operator and achieved the rank of Lance Corporal. Upon his discharge from the army, he immigrated to Canada.
Arriving in Canada, Agi made his way west to southern Alberta where he first started working in the sugar beet fields near Picture Butte. Hearing that there were greater opportunities in the Crowsnest Pass mining industry, he moved to Coleman to work in the McGillvary coal mines. It was here that he met Margaret Matejovie and they were married on January 28, 1949. Their wedding was dubbed the 'social event' of the year as it lasted for three days and their bridal party consisted of 12 bridesmaids and groomsmen along with two flower girls and ring bearers. It was here that their daughter Helen was born along with their son, Frank. In 1952, Margaret and Agi moved to Lethbridge where their second daughter, Diane, was born. After Lethbridge, Calgary became their new home where Ken was born. When Margaret's father passed away in 1962, they moved back to the Foremost area to farm. They resided there until 1973 and then retired to Lethbridge. They remained in their home until 2007 and then moved to Martha's House, but when their health declined, made the move to Edith Cavell.

Agi was very proud of being a WWII veteran. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Polish Veterans' Association and the Polish Combatants' Association, of which he served as president for many years. He and Margaret never missed an event at the Polish Hall.
In his retirement, Agi kept busy with many fishing trips to Beaver Mines and excursions in their motor home to various fishing spots along with trips to Arizona, Hawaii and Europe. When at home, he tended the garden and yard with diligence. During the summer, his grass was always the greenest in the neighbourhood and in the winter, his sidewalks were always the first ones cleared. He was very proud of his apple trees and always shared the fruits of his labour with friends and family. The most important thing to Agi was his family. He was always there to provide help and support to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildrren.
Agi is survived by his daughters Helen (Karl) Kloepper and Diane (Gordon) Pommen of Lethbridge, and his son Ken (Barb) Wolosiuk of Carstairs. He is also survived by four grandchildren - Kim (Michael) Isaac of Brooks, Darcy (Julie) Kloepper of Lethbridge, Jennifer and Courtney Pommen of Lethbridge, and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Morgan Isaac. Agi will also be sadly missed by his sisters-in-law, Josephine Sivak of Dubrava, Slovakia and Toni Gejdos of Lethbridge as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his many friends in the Polish community.
Agi was predeceased by his wife, Margaret in 2009, his infant son, Frank, in 1952, and his family in Poland and Russia.
