Barry Stannard

Official Obituary of

25/4/1947 - to - 19/5/2025

Mr. Barry Anthony Stannard of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Mavis Stannard, passed away peacefully at home, on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the age of 78 years.

Barry was born on April 25th, 1947, in Wisbech, UK to Tony and Joyce Stannard. He immigrated to Lethbridge, AB at the age of 10 years old.

Barry joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1966 and served in the Air Force filling a multitude of roles. As a navigator, he was rewarded the Jorge Chavez Medal in recognition for rescue operations in the Peru earthquake of May 31st, 1970. In the 80s, he became the head of 435 Squadron, and it was during this time he also taught Search and Rescue operations and techniques to help find those lost in the Canadian north. He then became the BAdmo (Base Administration Officer of CFB Edmonton, Alberta). In the 90s, his final posting was in Winnipeg, MB, where he focused on the operations management of the Canadian Armed Forces at 1CAD Headquarters. He retired in 1998, at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and moved to Lethbridge in 1999.

After he retired from the military, he started to teach operations management courses at the University of Lethbridge in 2000. His passion for teaching and genuine care for his students left a lasting impression. Equally important to him, however, were the friendships he built with his colleagues. He genuinely cherished the time spent in thoughtful conversation, respectful collaboration, and shared laughter. After 17 years of teaching, he retired for the 2nd time.

Outside of work, Barry enjoyed camping and fishing with his family in Many Glacier National Park in Montana. When not able to get to Montana, he enjoyed long drives in the Canadian Rocky Mountains with his wife, Mavis, and daughter, Katherine. He had playful competitions with his son over who had the best technology at the time, such as computers or otherwise. He enjoyed carpentry with his granddaughter Joyce, and rock-tumbling with his granddaughter Vidya.

He is survived by his wife, Mavis; son Tony (Nanda); grandchildren Joyce and Vidya; sister-in-law Lois Ross; his Aunt Dorrie; cousins, David (Helen), John (Gillian), and Carol (Richard).

He was preceded by his daughter Katherine; parents Tony and Joyce; and his in-laws, Larry and Mina Gillott.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Dr. Bruce Martin, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stars Ambulance, https://stars.ca/

Barry will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
