Lee Smith

Official Obituary of

7/9/1970 - to - 13/6/2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Lee. He received his angel wings on June 13, 2024, after a courageous battle with Cancer surrounded by his loved ones at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a fun-loving grandpa and a cherished friend. We will always remember his kind and gentle spirit, his witty humor, his infectious laughter, and his unwavering love for his family and friends.

Lee Smith was born on September 7, 1970, at the Blood Indian Hospital to Gregg (Edwina) Smith and Karen Smith. Lee, as he was known to all, is survived by his loving wife, Nina, whom he built a life with for over 21 years.  Lee was the proud father to Myles (Genevieve) Black Water, Amelia Crow Shoe, Chancy (Jon) Black Water, Karli (Darryl) Crow Shoe, Kennedy Smith, and his precious baby girl Peyton Bailee (Jerrance) Smith. Lee was even a prouder grandfather to Knox and Niiskun Crowshoe and Mesa, Sophie, and Bruno Black Water. Lee was also the loving uncle to Teigan, Kristina, Taryn, Dylan, and Bailey Cakes. His sisters Kristen Smith, Kori (Phil) Davis, Jody Little Wolf, Francine (Jared) Monroe, Carol (Bobby) Smith, Lori (Brandy) Yellow Wings, Carolyn Wells, Molly (Rex) Davis, Doris (Dale) Low Horn, and Sandra ‘Cheuy’ Soop. Brothers Rob Davis, Todd Smith, Evans Jr. (Diana) Melting Tallow, Paul Old Shoes and Johnny (Deanna) Pace. Lee is also survived by his paternal uncles Morris (Bettyann) Little Wolf, Jimmy SWAG and John Old Shoes, his paternal aunties Nancy (Woodrow) North Man and Rene Smith. His maternal aunty Thelma Bromley. In-laws Rosaline, Virginia, Larry, Barry (Lorraine), Jerry (Joanne), Phyllis, and Deanna Black Plume. His adopted daughters Aaliyah Wolf Child, Geena Small Legs, Lexi Yellow Horn, and Raquel Healy.

Lee attended Canyon School and Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek, Alberta; FP Walshe in Fort Macleod, Alberta; and Spruce Grove Composite High in Spruce Grove, Alberta. Lee furthered his education where he briefly attended the University of Alberta, then later transferred to the University of Lethbridge where he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Native Studies. Lee was a professional student; always finding new programs of study to pursue. Recently, and until his passing, he was preparing to complete his master’s degree. Lee kept it a secret that he once travelled to the United States to complete his LSATs, scoring a 167. Prior to beginning his educational path in Lethbridge, Lee declined acceptance to the Harvard School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts. He did so without any regrets, as he chose to remain close to home to prioritize being a father. Lee was chosen to be a participant on the Lethbridge Spelling Bee show, and he was proud that he did so well.

Lee worked in various jobs including Elan Construction, Blood Tribe Bus Coop, Piikani Children Services, LTT Trucking, Westpoint Building Services, DeGraaf Construction, Buddy L Construction, A-Win Insurance, and Solutions Services. Lee also, was the President of Piikani Minor Hockey, Vice-President of Southern Sage Female Jr. Hockey team and a coach with the Fort Macleod Minor Hockey.

You can guarantee that Lee spent his youth at his Auntie Juanita’s house. It was there he enjoyed horseback riding, stealing the farm truck to go into townsite, and hiding from his mom and dad after a night out with Jr. Additionally, he had many wild nights out and quality time with both sides of his family and friends. Lee also frequently spent time with his Uncle Arnold Smith, who taught him how to fish and even tasked him with catching gophers and cutting off their tails, paying him 25 cents for each one. He also credits his uncle’s Evans, Morris, Walter, Arnold, Percy, and Floyd with teaching him many valuable lessons as he was growing up. Additionally, he would often walk or ride his bike to his Uncle Floyd’s or Louis Smith’s to spend time with his cousins, including Lyle, Tikki, and Leona, among others. Lee also participated in numerous activities which included hockey, slo-pitch, and rodeo.

In his later years, Lee met his wife Nina, and together they raised their daughter Peyton, of whom he was incredibly proud. During his free time, he enjoyed activities such as golfing, fishing, camping, gambling and playing online Keno. Lee also cherished traveling and spending quality time with family and friends. He took great pleasure in supporting Peyton in her hockey and softball/baseball pursuits and expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to be an involved hockey dad. Lee beamed with pride as he watched Peyton excel in these sports. His joy knew no bounds when Peyton was accepted to the University of Alberta.

He was also very proud of his other daughters, Amelia, as she was crowned the Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess and later achieved her Law Degree from the University of Calgary. Karli excelled in her academics, earning a Master of Management Degree from the University of Calgary and making Lee a proud grandfather, while Kennedy showcased her impressive skateboarding skills and academic achievements in Culinary from the Lethbridge College.

Over time Lee built a special bond with Myles, Genevieve, Chancy, Jon, and Jerrance. They spent quality time together, engaged in shared activities, and had their regular visits. He particularly looked forward to his weekly visits from Sophie and Bruno and watching them develop their unique personalities.

Lee was a devoted son to his mother, Karen. He took this job seriously, ensuring that he was there for his mother throughout his life. He would often text his mom crazy pictures to make her laugh. His mother felt nothing but love from her son and will miss his visits, phone calls, and texts. Lee found immense joy in bonding with his dad through their shared love of golf, hockey, and Rodeo.

Kristen adored her big brother, which he used to his advantage from time to time. Lee would bribe her with candy or change to keep these occurrences from their parents so that he could stay out of trouble. Lee took his responsibility as a sibling seriously. He and Kori shared a special brother and sister relationship: the strong silent type. Even through arguments, they kept their secrets, and each knew those “looks” that could convey a conversation that only they would understand. In addition, Lee was a beloved friend who spent everyday texting with Johnny, Jordie, and Marvin from morning to night.

Lee was a man whose quiet demeanor belied a truly remarkable soul. Lee was not one to seek the spotlight, but his presence left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His culinary skills were legendary, and many of us have been fortunate enough to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Lee's prowess in the kitchen was matched only by his humility, as he never sought recognition for his exceptional talents.

Despite his intelligence, Lee remained modest about it, never seeking to overshadow others with his knowledge. Instead, he chose to impart wisdom with a gentle touch, always leaving people feeling valued and respected.

Lee's sense of humor was infectious, and his quick wit never failed to bring joy to those around him. He had a way of lighting the mood and making even the most mundane moments memorable.

Passionate about equality in relationships, Lee was a shining example of respect and consideration. His friendly and approachable nature made him a confidant to many, and his willingness to listen and offer support endeared him to all who sought his advice. In addition to his interpersonal skills, Lee was incredibly considerate and helpful, always ready to lend a hand to those in need.

As we bid farewell to a man who embodied kindness, humility, and love. Lee's legacy will endure in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his memory will continue to inspire us all to be better, kinder, and more compassionate.

Lee was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Jane (nee Russell) and Edward Davis; his paternal grandparents Grace (nee Thompson) and Chief Pete Smith; mother in-law Rosaline (nee Hoof) Shot Both Sides; brother Ron Davis; maternal aunts and uncles: Olive Davis, Vivian Allen, Juanita Melting Tallow, Wilbert Davis, Chester Davis, Evans Melting Tallow; paternal aunts and uncles: Holly Old Shoes, Frances (Ralph Sr.) Weasel Fat, Walter (Bernadette) Smith, Joseph (Agnes) Smith, Randy, Johnny and Martin “Woody” Smith and Eunice Van Loon, Floyd (Maryann) and Arnold Smith. Lee was also predeceased by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews all members of the family who greeted Lee with open and loving arms.

Apologies to those who may have been missed. Lee was grateful for all the friends, relatives, and acquaintances he made throughout his life.
