Alice Marian Scott

1924 ~ 2014

Born in Lethbridge in 1924, Alice was the youngest child of Berton and Alma Jane Hoyt in a family of six children. Alice grew up in Lethbridge living in the Hoyt family home her grandfather constructed at 1261 6 Ave A South. Her father was the proprietor of the Hoyt Hardware store in downtown Lethbridge. Summers with her grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins were enjoyed at the Hoyt family cottage in Waterton Park.

Alice graduated high school in 1942 and went to work as a secretary at the Lethbridge Iron Works. In April of 1944, Alice married Raymond Scott who was with the wartime RCAF stationed at the Lethbridge airfield. After the war Alice and Ray continued to work in Lethbridge where Ray worked as a automotive mechanic. In 1951 Alice and Ray moved to Calgary where Ray had work with CP Airlines as an aircraft mechanic.

Alice set up house in their new Calgary home on 49 Ave SW in the district of Altadore. In 1952 baby Richard arrived followed in a few years by Donald and finally Bruce in 1958. As the boys were growing up the Scott family would spend many holidays with Alice’s family in Lethbridge and summer vacations at the cottage in Waterton.

In 1965 Alice and Ray moved the family to Edmonton as Ray had a new job working for the government inspecting airplanes. They moved into a new house on 41 Avenue in the district of Petrolia in 1966. Alice went to work as a secretary for the Edmonton Public School Board at the then newly opened Harry Ainlay High School. It was good job to have as the boys completed their public schooling, since Alice enjoyed all school holidays and the summers off.

Alice retired in 1988 and enjoyed many trips travelling across Canada with Ray. Gardening, birdwatching, cross country skiing were enjoyed. In 1992 Alice travelled to Europe with sisters Betty and Isabel. While in Belgium and France the sisters visited the graves of their long-lost uncles Millard and Norman who died there in the first world war.

Her sons, Richard, Donald and Bruce and their families deeply miss Alice’s good nature and cheerful humor.
