Horst Schimanski passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 2, 2008. After enduring the challenges of a long illness. He was born in Germany the son of the late Herman and Marianne (Zerner) Schimanski. He came to Canada with his family in 1953 and settled in the Lethbridge area. In 1963 the family moved to Picture Butte and bought a farm in the Barhill area. In future years the farm grew and Horst had his own land that he farmed until 1992. In the off season of farming he would go north and work as head mechanic with Pretty Ray Geophysical. He then went to work for the Picture Butte Golf and Winter Club as mechanic until his retirement.

He loved music, tennis, and curling. You could always hear him happily singing. He coached soccer, loved to travel and some of his most memorable trips were taken to Massachusetts for the holidays where all the family would be together.

Horst was a quiet, kind, and loving man to those who got to know him.

He was predeceased by his parents Herman and Marianne, brother Hank, sisters Ursela Opdelak, Barbara Kipnik Ingrid Gron, and Doris Grferer and his brother-in-laws William Modzeleski Jr. and Jan Modzeleski Sr.

Left to remember his kindness and loving ways is his wife Eva-Gene, sons Matthew and Joshua; sisters Rose Wenzel, Marianne Hillyer, Ellen Grferer, and Bridgette Van Dyk; brothers John, Herman Jr., and Gary; sister-in-laws June Modzeleski and Sherrill Modzeleski and numerous nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 7:00pm and 8:00pm, on Friday, December 5, 2008, at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 St., S, and Saturday December 6, 2008 from 10am to Service time.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am, on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 - 4 St., S., Lethbridge, AB, with Reverend Elizabeth Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
