HELEN OLENA RUABEN (BABA) of Shaughnessy, passed away peacefully at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the age of 85 years. She will be missed dearly by her sons Randy (Helen), Perry (Sherri); grandchildren Kristy (Chris), Neil, Paige, Michael Ruaben and Howard Beaudette; great-grandchildren Maya, Rylan, Keanna; sister Katherine; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her parents John and Annie Kiefuik; daughter Valerie; sisters Ann Larson, Jean Boychuck; brother William Kiefuik; special friend Laurie Hays; as well as two infant children.
Helen was born on June 22, 1925 in Slawa, Alberta. She grew up in Rosedale, Alberta and later moved to Shaughnessy where she married and raised 3 children. Helen worked as the postmistress in Shaughnessy for 30 years until her retirement in 1991. Helen enjoyed traveling and her adventures brought her to many exotic places around the world. After her retirement, she moved to Victoria to be close to her sister Anne, brother-in-law Borgie and their family. She returned to Lethbridge after a few years and eventually settled back home in Shaughnessy, where she was happiest of all.
'Baba' loved to cook and was known for the many Ukrainian and Italian dishes, including her renowned sour cabbage rolls and spaghetti, which she lovingly prepared for her family. Baba enjoyed spending time with her family and loved her grandchildren dearly. Over the past year she looked forward to visits from Maya, who brought her great joy. Helen had a great sense of humour and was laughing with her family right to the end. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to all the nurses on 4A for their care over the past two weeks.
A gathering in Helen's honour will be held at the SHAUGHNESSY COMMUNITY CENTRE on Sunday, January 23, 2011, between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. A light lunch will be served.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army Community & Family Services, 1811 - 2 Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1J 2C9.
