Florence Oswald

Official Obituary of

27/9/1930 - to - 25/1/2008

FLORENCE CAROLROSE OSWALD (OSTBY) passed away on Friday, January 25, 2008 at St. Michael's Palliative Care Hospice Unit. After experiencing several bouts of cancer she succumbed to the disease.

Florence was born on September 27, 1930 in Lethbridge at the Galt Hospital. She attended school in Milk River and Warner. She earned her A.R.C.T. -Piano Teacher in 1954. Her post secondary education was received at a number of institutions, and then enrolled and graduated from Dakota Wesley University in Mitchell, SD with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1983.

She and her husband returned to Lethbridge in 2000 after he retired from ministry with United Methodist Church in the Dakotas. Florence was a co-worker with her husband, and she also served with the United Methodist Women's organization. She held various offices on the State and District Level.

Florence grew up in Warner and taught piano in Warner, Milk River, and Coutts. From Warner she went to Medicine Hat and taught music at the former Hillcrest Christian College. Following this she married Kenneth George Oswald also from the Warner area. Then Ken was asked to take a probationary pulpit assignment in Arnprior, Ontario. This was a challenge as he took some university courses the first year. Florence continued to teach music in Arnprior.

A move to Edmonton allowed Ken to earn his B.Ed. degree. Following that we returned to Hillcrest Christian College where they both taught. Florence was ""recycled"" at least she thought so.

The Bishop then assigned us to the North Dakota Conference where we remained for 12 years, and then to South Dakota for 20 years.

Florence is survived by her husband of 48 years; a daughter Lavine (Alex) Shapiro; grandsons Jacob and Joshua Shapiro of Salt Lake City, UT; a son Lowell (Bonnie) of Vermillion, SD; sister Gloria Graham and brother Charles Ostby both of Lethbridge; as well as many nieces nephews and a host of friends.

Florence was predeceased by her parents Clarence and Belle (Bannen) Ostby and a brother Eldon Ostby.

On returning to Lethbridge we affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church. The fellowship and activities have been enjoyable; the friendships enriching our lives.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 7:30PM and 8:30PM on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30AM on Friday, February 1, 2008 at the EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH, 4717 - 24 Ave South, Lethbridge, with Pastor Dave Acree officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:00PM at the Warner Cemetery.

Those who wish may make memorial donations in her memory to a charity or organization of one's choice.

Service Date: February 1, 2008
