October 6th, 1926 ~ August 23, 2009
It is with great sadness that the family of Don McLean announces his passing on Sunday, August 23, 2009 at St. Michael's Health Centre after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer Disease.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor McLean, his four daughters, Dawna-Rae (Bruce) Court, Dianne (Jerry) LeGrandeur, Cheryl (Dave) Boyden, Barbara (Gordon) McIntosh, 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, Eleanor's children Karen Spanswick (Andy Ede) and Sharon (Bill) Hnatiuk and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Tom and Nan McLean, and three brothers, Jimmy, Douglas, and Tom McLean.
Don was born and raised in Lethbridge. He was a hardworking man, a family man, and a talented athlete. Don worked for over 40 years with Alberta Brewers Agents (A.B.A.). He was a member of the Elks Club, the Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and held various positions as a board member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Don was a great hockey player, playing right wing for such teams as the Lethbridge Native Sons, Nelson Maple Leafs, Nanaimo Clippers, and most importantly for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs when they won the world Championship in 1951. He coached the Lethbridge Sugar Kings for two years and took them to the semifinals of the Memorial Cup. He was an avid hockey fan and enjoyed watching his grandsons play as well. In retirement years, he took up golf and had fun playing many of the courses throughout southern Alberta and B.C. He was very proud of his family and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, who could always bring a smile to his face. He will be remembered for his love of family and home, his sense of humour, his contribution to sport and church, his attention to detail and the importance of a job well done.
A celebration of Don's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 at ST. ANDREW'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818 - 5 Ave South, Lethbridge, with Reverend Hugh Jack, officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Lethbridge Chapter, #402, 740 - 4 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0N9 or the Galt Museum, 501 - 1 Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 5Y4 . Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
