Hugh McKenna

Official Obituary of

20/5/1923 - to - 19/4/2009

MR. HUGH MCKENNA passed away on Sunday April 19, 2009 at the Chinook Regional Hospital at the age of 85 years.

Born on Sunday May 20, 1923 in Lethbridge, Alberta, the late Hugh McKenna was raised and educated in Lethbridge attending and completing his formal education at St. Basil's School. Anxious to serve his country (as did his seven brothers), he joined the army at a young age in 1938. At age 17 he went overseas during the Second World War and completed five and a half years of service there. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant. In 1947, he met his late wife Marilyn, and they were married in 1949. Marilyn predeceased Hugh the summer of 2001. In 1950, he joined the Canadian Militia and attained the rank of W02 (Sergeant Major). One of the highlights of Hugh's military career was making the first draft of the Canadian Contingent for the Queen's Coronation in 1953. He was one of 15 men selected to represent Alberta and served on the Honor Guard. After retiring in 1957 from his distinguished military career, he and his brother Bill (Bud) started their own business: ""McKenna Brothers Stucco and Plastering"". In 1980 he retired from his business and was able to enjoy more time spent on his beloved acreage south of Lethbridge. Hugh loved the outdoors: camping, big game hunting, and fishing. He especially enjoyed his time spent with the horses and animals on the acreage, and took great pride in being able to raise his family in the country and take them to various horse events.

In 2006, Hugh married Stella Brown and they resided in The View at Lethbridge until his passing.

He is survived by his wife Stella, children Darilyn, Gary and Maxine, and grandchildren Jesse and Justin Bruised Head and Leanne Hansen. In respect of Hugh's wishes, a private family service will be held.
