Kay MacLeod
Official Obituary of
24/7/1919 - to - 13/12/2008
MRS. KATHRYN ""KAY"" MACLEOD of Lethbridge, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the age of 89 years.
Born and raised in Lethbridge, Kay MacLeod graduated from the LCI, and received her Bachelor of Arts from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Following the untimely death of her father, her career path changed from nursing to education, and she earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta in 1943. Her first teaching position was at White School, later known as McNally School, where she taught English, French and music. She then taught at the LCI until she married Bill in 1944. Later in life she volunteered to teach at the Dorothy Gooder School for the mentally handicapped, then returned to the LCI where she enjoyed many years as a counsellor until her retirement in 1980.
Kay believed that she was fortunate to have received a university education, and strived to contribute her skills to the community throughout her life. She served on the University Senate from 1982-1988, the Recreation Commission, the Committee for the Centenary 1967, and on the boards of the Library, the Yates Centre, and the YWCA, noting wryly that she was the 'token woman' in a time when women did not participate widely in public affairs. Kay was a founding member of the Lethbridge chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women. She also contributed to the life of First Baptists Church through the choir, the Sunday school, and the CGIT. From 1958-1961, she hosted ""The Kay MacLeod Show"", which included items of local interest, and thoughtful interviews with notable visitors to Lethbridge. The show was one of the very first ""talk shows"" in the developing medium of television.
Kay was an enthusiastic golfer, an avid reader, and one who enjoyed the company of her family and her many friends. To the end, she remained genuine and gracious, and she will be missed by all who knew her. Kay was predeceased by her husband, Bill in 1988, and is survived by her daughter Carol MacLeod of Burnaby, sister Elinor (Fletch) Bennett and brother Don (Anne) Frey of Victoria, and many well loved nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm, on Saturday, December 20, 2008, at the FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 1614 - 5 Ave., S., Lethbridge, AB, with Dr. Bruce Martin officiating.
