MACKINTOSH, JOHN DOUGLAS (DOUG)

It is with great sadness that the family of JOHN DOUGLAS MACKINTOSH announces his passing at age 70 on September 26, 2011 after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer.

He is survived by Pat (Jacques), his loving wife for over 47 years, and his children, daughter Lisa (Troy Wason) and Rob. He is also survived by his mother Johanna Mackintosh and siblings Kathleen Caswell (Art), Allan Mackintosh (Lois), Patricia Lomheim (Clarence) and Lorna Jean Duffy (Jack), one aunt, Minnie (Peter) Veenland as well as many nieces, nephews and a large, loving extended family.

Doug was born in Claresholm on Christmas Eve in 1940 and raised on the family farm east of Granum. His youth was spent excelling at both sports and 4H and he was crowned World Wheat King in 1959. His love of sports followed him into adulthood where he spent many a weekend at bonspiels and tournaments and later coaching his kids and helping to build community athletic facilities.

Doug was a stoic man who faced his long-term battle with rheumatoid arthritis with a positive attitude and more strength than thought possible. At the same time he had a soft side that he shared with those he loved. He was a proud and supportive husband and father. He loved a good argument, practical jokes and his Edmonton Oilers.

He spent his entire life working in the cattle industry and became a trusted advisor and friend to many over the past 24 years while working with Balog Auction.

Doug was predeceased by his parents Emmeline (1943) and Jack (1982) Mackintosh and his in-laws Helen (1981) and Ted (1982) Jacques.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, October 3, 2011 at ST. ANDREW'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1818 - 5 Ave South, Lethbridge, with Rev. Hugh Jack officiating.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Doug's name may be made directly to either the Arthritis Society Alberta & NWT Division, #200, 1301 - 8 Street SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1B7 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 317 10 Street S. Lethbridge, AB T1J 9Z9.
