22/3/1924 - to - 3/12/2007

MABEL NELLIE (POPOFF) KOWALEWSKI, beloved wife of the late Waclaw (Walter) Kowalewski, passed away peacefully, at the Edith Cavell Nursing Home in Lethbridge on Monday, December 3, 2007, at the age of 83 with her daughters by her side after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers.

Mom will be forever loved and missed by her daughter Janice (Garth) McFarland of Carmangay, Lorelei Hoffarth of Carmangay and Karen (Darwin) Romanchuk of Lethbridge; her grandchildren; Joseph, Cassandra and Alexandra McFarland; Jessica, Courtney and Chance Hoffarth; Dwayne, Julie and Dylan Romanchuk; and her two sisters, Anne and Katie, of Calgary; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Mabel was predeceased by her parents, Mike and Mabel Popoff; her sister, Vera Marshall; her brother-in-law, Anthony Hodges; and son-in-law Scott Hoffarth.

Mom was born March 22, 1924 in Taghum, B.C. the eldest daughter of Mike and Mabel Popoff. In 1929 the young family moved to the Queenstown area to start farming. In the following years mom's three other sisters were born. After leaving school mom went to Calgary and worked there for several years mainly in the Dry-cleaning industry.

Mom and Dad were married November 20, 1954. In 1955 they returned to the Popoff farm to begin their new life, where they raised their three daughters, Janice, Lorelei, and Karen.

Mom had a passionate and strong heart which showed in the farm life she had with dad. She could be found outside most of the time either helping dad with the grain and cattle farm or tending to her garden and yard. She provided the family with fresh produce and then stocked the shelves with preserves from her prize winning gardening talents. The flowerbeds and garden on the farm were always weed free and flourishing. Her amazing sewing talents clothed her family for years. She diligently would drive her daughters to music and singing lessons to enhance their lives. Her artistic capabilities showed in her ceramic creations. Later in life, dad and mom would enjoy bowling together in leagues which continued when they moved to Lethbridge in 1995. The couple could also be found dancing up a storm at weddings or local dances. Mom loved visiting with the local community people and the door was always open with the aroma of coffee and tasty home cooked food.

A private family service will be held.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Lethbridge, 402, 740-4th Ave. S., Lethbridge, AB, T1J 0N9.
