Bernard Gyorfi

Official Obituary of

24/5/1922 - to - 10/2/2010

In the gentle presence of his loving family, God's promise of heavenly peace came to MR. BERNARD (BROWN) GYORFI at St. Michael's Health Centre on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the age of 87 years, following a yearlong battle with cancer.

Left to cherish many fond memories are his daughters Sharon (Brian) Wright and Brenda Packer; his four grandchildren; Laureen (Jim) Kovach, Heather (James) Spiess, Scott Packer and Kyle Packer and his four great-grandchildren; Dominic and Gabrielle Kovach and Elizabeth and Shaina Spiess.

Bernard was predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Elizabeth, as well as his parents Alexander and Elizabeth Gyorfi, his brother Alexander Gyorfi Jr. and his nephew, Douglas Gyorfi.

Bernard will also be sadly missed by his brother Michael (Grace) Gyorfi of Medicine Hat; his sisters Isabel (Bert) Kemmet of Lethbridge and Kathleen (Bud) Phillips of Coaldale; his brothers-in-law Paul (Gaile) Rusznak and George (Connie) Rusznak and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernard was born May 24, 1922 in Kiskinizs, Aubauy Megye, Hungary. At the age of six years he emigrated to Canada with his family, settling in the Bow Island area where he farmed for over 50 years, taking time away for military service from 1942 to 1946. He and Elizabeth retired to Lethbridge in 1992.

Bernard was a loving family man and a well-respected friend, neighbor, and business man. He volunteered countless hours for church and community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Legion, Elks, and the Bow Island Livestock Board, of which he was a founding member. He was an impeccable farmer and won many awards for his purebred Hereford Bulls. He served as a Councilor for the County of Forty Mile for 6 years.

Vigil Rites (Prayers) and a Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 pm on Monday, February 15, 2010 at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge, AB.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at ST. PATRICK'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 318 10th Street South, Lethbridge, AB, with Father Tim Boyle, celebrant.

Interment to follow at a later date at Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Those who wish, memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Health Care Foundation, Palliative Care, or Pastoral Care, 1400-9th Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1J 4V5.

We wish to extend our sincere thank-you to family, friends, and all who made a difference in Dad's struggle this past year.
