Ben Groothuis

Official Obituary of

3/12/1932 - to - 2/2/2022

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Dad and Grandpa. Ben passed away peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital, on February 2, 2022 at the age of 89 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving daughters, Jane Huisman (grandchildren Ashley and April), Lorraine Groothuis, Debra Edwards (husband Chaz) (grandchildren, Zachary, Natasha, Ethan and Tatiana).

He was predeceased by his wife Elsie, daughter Sharon Groothuis and grandson Ryan and brother Bill.

With his servant’s heart, he always enjoyed helping others fix their vehicles and made many beautiful woodwork creations, as he loved working with his hands. He and Elsie played many active roles in various churches they attended.

His passions included working on cars, antique cars, gardening (especially his beautiful roses), reading, playing the piano and feeding peanuts to the blue jays in their backyard.

He grew up in Holland and came to Canada, when he was 18, where he became a mechanic and married his beautiful wife Elsie and raised our family in Lethbridge, Alberta.

He and Elsie would often be found working in their own backyard garden, tending to their favorites - roses, raspberries, strawberries, and vegetables. He so enjoyed his garage that he built, working on vehicles, many woodwork projects, including building within the house and going on beautiful trips to various places with Elsie and our family.

We will forever treasure the many Christmas ornaments and woodwork that he made for us and his grandchildren and memories of beautiful holidays to BC, Logan Pass, Oregon, various lakes, to name a few with our precious Dad.

Ben will forever live on in our hearts. The family wishes to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to the exceptional, caring staff at the Chinook Regional Hospital.  Our gratitude also, to the Nurses, Healthcare Aids and Recreation Department at Edith Cavell Care Center.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Ben’s name to the Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) Foundation of Canada, 20 Eglinton Avenue West, 16th Floor, Toronto, Ontario M4R 1K8, or a charity of your choice.

A private family Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Saturday, February 12, 2022. The family asks those who wish, to watch the service VIA livestream by going to https://www.mbfunerals.com/obituary/Ben-Groothuis.
