Daniel Finnerty

Official Obituary of

4/9/1928 - to - 4/5/2007

DANIEL PATRICK FINNERTY passed away peacefully in the presence of family, on Friday, May 4, 2007 in the North Ridge Long Term Care Centre in Oakville, Ontario. He will be missed by daughter Lori (Brian) Bell, stepson Merlin (Ann) Crawford, granddaughters Jessica Bell and Kandie Lundholm and grandson Kevin Crawford. He leaves behind 5 great grandchildren, Cole, Melissa, Shane, Joey, and Dakota. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews.

Daniel is predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Melba, parents Alphonse and Mary Finnerty, brothers Bob and Jack and sister Theresa Wake.

Daniel was born on September 4, 1928 and was raised on a farm outside of Oyen, Alberta. He was the youngest of four children and told stories of fun and hard work with their Clydesdale horses. He worked at numerous jobs, even living in Alaska for a while. He became an auto body mechanic and worked for many years with his brother Jack at the Modern Body Shop in Lethbridge. He danced his way into the heart of Melba Crawford (nee Lazzarotto) and they married in November of 1953. In the late 1970s Dan made the brave decision to finish his high school diploma and took some university courses, which led to a position at SAIT in Calgary, teaching in the trades department. In 1981 he became the Head of the Trades Department at Medicine Hat College where he remained until he retired in 1993.

Dan loved to hunt and fish and spent every weekend from May to September (and beyond) in the camper with Mel, parked beside a lake or mountain stream.

In 2003, Dan and Mel decided it was time to move back to Lethbridge. They had a home custom built on the north side and moved in just before Christmas. In the summer of '05, Dan suffered through a serious illness and moved to Good Samaritan Society's Park Meadow Village.

After Mel's death, Dan's daughter and family moved him to Ontario. His body will come back to rest beside his beloved wife. Dan will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Prayers will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Monday, May 7, 2007 at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4th St. S., Lethbridge, AB

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at ST. BASIL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604-13th St. N., Lethbridge, AB, with Father Tim Boyle, celebrant. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Dan's name may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 207, 542-7th St. S., Lethbridge, AB T1J 2H1.
