JULIA SABINE BOND EWING passed away on Friday, June 24, 2011 at St. Michael's Palliative Care, at the age of 95.
Julia was born on July 29, 1915 at Vulcan, Alberta, the 3rd of five children born to John and Blanche Bond, who were both deaf mute. At the age of 6 her family moved to High River, Alberta where she resided until 1949. She moved to Lethbridge and then to a farm near Carmangay, Alberta. In 1966 she returned to Lethbridge and has resided there until her passing.
She is survived by four children; Richard Service of Calgary, Shirley Kooy of Lethbridge, Daniel (Gloria) Service of Stoney Plain and Patricia (Randy) Jensen of Lethbridge and one brother, Victor (Mamie) Bond of Kelowna, B.C. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Julia was predeceased by her mother, father, sisters Evelyn, Mary and Deborah , son-in-law Peter Kooy and granddaughter Tracey Kooy.
Julia was very active in many organizations in Lethbridge. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, Eastern Star - Laurel Chapter (Past Worthy Matron), Daughters of the Nile (Honoured Queen of Sakara Temple of Alberta). She was a member of the Lethbridge Curling Club for many years and was still an active member of the Lethbridge Horseshoe Club and her 10 pin bowling league. She was also very active at the Lethbridge Senior Centre where she volunteered regularly and led the Keep Fit class until she retired at the age of 90. Julia received many honours over the years including Volunteer of the Year Award, and Senior Citizen of the Year for Alberta. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother and all of her family have been recipients of her handicrafts, be it a pillow, knitted blanket, cross stitch picture, ceramic figurine or her wonderful knitted African dolls.
She was a wonderful role model for her family and we will always remember Julia's ABC's of Life:
A is for Attitude. You must have a positive attitude and be grateful for each day.
B is for Believe. You must believe in yourself.
C is for Commitment. You must be committed to achieving something, be it big or small.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge, with Reverend Dr. Alex Lawson, officiating. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Julia's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
