Emma Dorricott

Official Obituary of

15/6/1913 - to - 18/10/2013

Emma Dorricott June 15, 1913 ~ October 18, 2013

""You don't get to be 100 without being a tough 'ole bird.""

It is with great sadness that the family of Emma Dorricott announces the end of an era with her passing late last week. Early in Emma's life she cooked for her brother, Martin, while he was at the farm in Arrowwood, Alberta. She left for California, USA with her parents and family and returned to Alberta with her brother and his family in 1938. Emma started work with the Canadian Pacific Railway as a cook in a travelling railway car for the different repair crews. It was while Emma was on an extra shift as a helper in High River that she met Walter (Wally) Dorricott. Emma quit her job in August 1942 and on September 4, 1942 married Wally Dorricott in Calgary. Later in 1942 Wally was transferred to a water pumping station in Manyberries where Emma joined him shortly after. Emma worked at the Red & White General Store and County General Store in Manyberries until Wally was transferred to Lethbridge in 1955. They bought a home in north Lethbridge and lived there until Wally's death in 1988. As a founding board member of the Lethbridge Senior Citizen Centre, Emma stayed active volunteering her time at the lottery booth and at Bingo's. Emma finally retired from working Bingo's when she was 94 but continued to play right up until the age 99. Even though her winnings weren't that great, she still enjoyed the atmosphere and the outing. Emma's mind was sharp with an amazing recall for details often telling stories of her life in Manyberries, sharing tips for cooking, discussing politics and sports. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610- 4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Search Dog Association www.canadiansearchdog.com or the Lethbridge Senior Citizen Organization www.lethseniors.com on her behalf.
