Jack was born on June 13, 1921 in High River, Alberta, the youngest child of Catharine and Ward Dick. His early years were spent on the Elkhorn Ranch on Willow Creek, after which the family moved into High River, and later Calgary. At a dance in 1939, Jack was spotted by Dorothy Nielsen, and the rest, as they say, is history. The two were married January 18, 1942 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Calgary, after which they took up residence in Edmonton.
While working there for Canadian Airways Training Limited, Jack was invited to become an instructor in the newly formed R.C.A.F. Para Rescue School, under the guidance of the legendary Wilfred ""Wop"" May.
In the early 1950's Jack, Dorothy and their two young sons moved to Lethbridge. It was here that Jack founded Prairie Ditching Ltd., and savored every day of work until he retired.
Besides his loving wife Dorothy, Jack is survived by his two daughters, Lorene Dick and Valorie Nielsen-Dick; three sons, Gregory (June), Clayton (Claire) and Graham (Paula); eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his cherished sister, Frances (William) Kendrick of Washington State. Jack's extended family, which included numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their families were deeply treasured by him.
He was predeceased by his parents James Ward and Catharine Bond Dick; brother and hero, Ward James ""Jim"" (Helen) Dick as well as his most beloved cousin and dear friend Archibald ""Archie"" (Dorothy) Dick.
