FRIEDA DEKKER

1925 ~ 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Frieda Dekker on Sunday April 2, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Frieda passed away peacefully with her family at her side.

Frieda was born in 1925 in Lethbridge, Alberta, the first of four children to John and Jenny Hobbelink. She met and married the love of her life, Louis Dekker and together they farmed near Nobleford, Alberta. The Dekker farm became Frieda’s sanctuary and purpose, spending countless hours nurturing its wonderful trees and garden.

A masterful writer and poet, her work has been published in numerous periodicals. Together with her literary skill, she was an accomplished painter with her works of art adorning homes and businesses throughout the community. She was a recipient of the Governor General medal as a young girl, but perhaps one of her most cherished memories came at the age of 89, when the Lethbridge & Area Seniors of Distinction Awards named her the winner in the Arts category.

Most importantly, Frieda leaves behind an incredible legacy of love, compassion and tolerance. Always giving to others, her family and community will miss her greatly.

Left to cherish her memory is her son: Kelvin (Karen) Dekker of Calgary; grandchildren Kenton (Jennifer) Dekker of Calgary & Lyndsay (Tim) Steller of Calgary; great-grandchildren Elliott Steller & Olive Steller. She is also survived by her sister Winnifred (Al) Wilson of Medicine Hat; her sister Joan Hoekstra of Calgary; her brother Morris (Dorothy) Hobbelink of Calgary. Frieda was pre-deceased by her husband Louis Dekker.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Age Care Columbia.

A Celebration of Frieda’s Life will be held at the MONARCH REFORMED CHURCH, 1 mile West of Hwy 23, 1.5 miles north of Monarch, AB, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Frieda’s name to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, 301- 620 Colborne St., London, ON, N6B 3R9.

I love you mom, am immensely proud and will remember you forever and always -Kelvin
