Emmett Coughlan passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at St. Michael's Palliative Care Unit, after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 72 years.
Emmett is survived by his wife, of nineteen years Shirley (Benci) Coughlan, and her children by her first marriage, Paul (Sarah) and their daughter Katie, Glen (Carmen) and their daughters Kiera, Kayden and Sydney all of Edmonton and Kristy (Debb) Carpenter of Lethbridge. Emmett always thought of Paul, Glen and Kristy as his own children.
Emmett was predeceased by his parents, Timothy A. Coughlan and Olivia O'Shea, along with his brother John and sister Olivia. He is survived by his brother Paul of Kingston and Tim of Peterborough, his sisters Helen of Kingston and Jean (Major) of Calgary.
Emmett was born on March 16, 1935, in Peterborough and raised in Hastings, Ontario, the youngest of seven siblings. After the death of his father in 1943, the family moved to Toronto in 1945. Emmett completed his schooling at St. Clare's Elementary School and St. Michael's High School. He graduated in Arts from St. Francis Xavier University in 1957, then received his commission as a RCAF Pilot Officer. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto in 1961. After his call to the bar in Ontario in 1963, Emmett moved to Calgary to practice law with his brother-in-law, William Major. In 1976 Emmett joined the Attorney General's Department as a Crown Prosecutor and worked for a year out of Peace River before moving to Pincher Creek, then Lethbridge. He completed his career with the Attorney General's Dept. in Lethbridge retiring in 1995.
Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held at 7:00PM on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at MARTIN BROS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 - 4 Street South, Lethbridge.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 - 12 Ave South, Lethbridge, with Father Tim Boyle celebrant. Cremation to follow.
In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
