Sheilah Convery

Official Obituary of

5/4/1932 - to - 11/10/2013

Sheilah May Convery April 5, 1932 ~ October 11, 2013 Sheilah passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Friday October 11, 2013 at the age of 81 years. She was born on April 5, 1932 on the farm near Ernfold, in Southern Saskatchewan. She was the eldest of 5 children born to James and Katherine Convery (Jim & Kate). Graduating from Herbert High School she always had a thirst for learning and this was just the beginning of her continuing education. She was an avid reader with an excellent memory. Mom first worked at the Weyburn Mental Hospital as a Psychiatric Aide. She then took a Study Supervisor position near Shaunavon, Sask. Here she met Irvin Duncan and they were married on July 3rd, 1952. They welcomed their daughter Diana in May 1953 and son Keith in November 1956. Sheilah graduated from the University of Lethbridge in 1977 with a Bachelor of Education, a Major in Mathematics. In the fall of 1978 Mom suffered a brain aneurism that nearly took her life but God had other plans. Sheilah moved to Creston, B.C. in 1987 where she worked for 10 years at Pioneer Villa Lodge, retiring in 1997. She made many good friends while living in Creston and enjoyed being close to her sister in law and long time friend Vera Herchmer. As tradition, our families spent Thanksgiving in Creston and we have many special memories of those times. Mom enjoyed the mild winters and no wind! Because she missed family she returned to Lethbridge in April of 2000. We almost lost her again in 2004 when her heart began to fail, however a pacemaker gave her a new lease on life. Because of health issues she had an appreciation for God's creation and its beauty around her. She was grateful for every day and enjoyed her twice daily walks around the lake near West Highlands where she lived. Mom worked out of the home at various jobs but was always there for her family. She was an excellent homemaker. Baking, sewing, canning, cleaning, and providing a loving home was important to her. She encouraged us to take swimming lessons and partake in school and church activities. Sheilah always had a loving, kind, giving nature, but she could get fired up and was a champion for the underdog. Though a good talker she was also a great listener. She had a beautiful smile and loved to laugh. Mom was always willing to try new things: horseback riding, alpine slides and waterslides, pistol competitions and even snow skiing. She enjoyed a good competitive card game and was always proud of her children and grandchildren and praised their accomplishments to all. In 2011 Sheilah met Gerald Peterson. As a result of a tragic accident Gerry moved into Pemmican Lodge where Mom was living. Gerry said when he saw the sparkle in Mom's eyes he just knew she was the right woman for him. They married on April 2nd, 2011. Sheilah is survived by her husband Gerald Peterson, daughter Diana Fuhrmann (Arnie), son Keith Duncan (Sandra) and grandchildren Shantel Lyons (Kevin), Nathan & Seth Duncan, Ryan Fuhrmann (Jacki) & Kyle Fuhrmann as well as great-grandchildren Wyatt & Sienna Lyons, Lainie & Ryder Fuhrmann, Kyleigh Tytula, sister Stella Wendel (Cliff) and brother David Convery (Mary) as well as numerous nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Jim Convery, her sister Loretta Williams and her grandson Cody Duncan. Sheilah never said Good-bye, just so long, see ya later (and we will). A Celebration of her life will be held at 3:00pm on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge.
