Gary Charles Cleghorn

Official Obituary of

Gary Charles Cleghorn of Picture Butte passed away peacefully with Brenda, Ryan, Ashley, Jalayne and Jeff by his side at St. Michael’s Health Centre.

Gary was born July 03, 1955, to Jean and John Cleghorn in Montreal, Quebec. He was raised in St-Hubert, went to Kensington Elementary School and then attended Centennial High School in Greenfield Park.

He was actively involved in sports like baseball and football, but his favourite was spending time playing hockey at the outdoor ice rink close to their house. His first job was a clerk at Royal Victoria hospital in Montreal and then became a partner in a corner store just down from his family home.

In December of 1976 Gary and his friends Tommy Murphy, Dewight Hamilton and Larry Tellivick decided to move out west to Calgary Alberta.

Gary then started to work at Consolidated Parts where Brenda order parts for Frank Automotive out of Lethbridge; this is where it all began. Brenda then moved to Calgary in 1978, and they were married in 1980 at the Lehto Family Farm.

In 1983 they moved to Picture Butte and went into partnership with Allied Distributors and opened Lehghorn Auto which they ran until November of 1988 when they then sold it. Gary started working for Harry Watson Farm Supply right after and stayed with this same company until retiring in March 2022. A few name changes along the way - Hi-way Service and Rocky Mountain Equipment.

Gary was very involved in the community; he joined the Lions Club in 1983, played hockey for the Oldtimers with the men’s hockey league which he later became the president of for many years and he played baseball with Butte Free Agents. He spent a lot of time bartending. volunteering for many local functions. and he loved his golf nights out at Keho with his good friends; he truly loved this community.

Their son Ryan Scott was born in January 1985 and then their daughter Jalayne Liegha in July 1988. Ryan married Ashley Karsten in 2016 and have 3 wonderful children. Emmett, Sierra and Weston. Jalayne married Jeff Ellis in 2017 and they are expecting their miracle baby in December.

Brenda and Gary sold their family home in Picture Butte to move out to the farm in 2018 where Gary spent many summer nights enjoying the fires and being outside where he truly found it so peaceful.

Gary was predeceased by Father John and mother Jean; brother-laws Russell Johnson, Cam Moore, Larry Lehto and sister-in-law Sandy Moore.


Gary is survived by his wife Brenda; son Ryan (Ashley); daughter Jalayne (Jeff); grandchildren; sister Jean Browne (John); brother Allan Cleghorn (Susan); sisters Lynn Huycke (Don) & Elaine Sellen (Mark), as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 pm, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the family campground. Please contact family for directions. Camping is available.
