Peter Baier 1927 ~ 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce that Peter Baier passed away peacefully on March 5, 2014 at the Cedar Creek Lodge in Lethbridge at the age of 86. Those left to cherish his memories are Irmina Baier, his loving wife and lifelong friend of 62 years, his four children, Johanna (Norman), Hans (Shelley), Rosemarie (Barry Allen), Norbert (Holly), his six special grandchildren, Katherine, Shayla, Jeffrey, Denae (Brody), Kevin (Mariah), and Caitlin (Brandon). He also leaves behind a sister in Germany, Anna Fichter, brother-in-law, John (Elizabeth) Vogel, numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was predeceased by his parents in Russia, his sister Stephanie, and brother-in-law George Fichter in Germany. Peter was born December 16, 1927, in Kamenka (a German province in Russia). He married Irmina in November, 1951 in Germany and immigrated to Canada in April 1953 on board the"" Nellie,"" The family initially resided in Turin. After two years, the family moved to the Crowsnest Pass, first to Bellevue, then Coleman. Here he worked first as a lumberjack cutting timber for the mine, then as a mine operator for Coleman Colleries. The family lived in a log house, on a small acreage in Willow Drive, Coleman, AB. Peter was fondly called ""Ponderosa Pete"" by the many who knew him. In 1971, the family moved back to a farm in Turin where he farmed for 20 years. He also worked in Nobleford at Noble Blades assembling farm machinery. After retiring, they moved to Lethbridge where he resided until his passing. Peter was dedicated to his family, a hard worker, loved to visit with friends, take care of his neighbor's yards, and grow vegetables in his garden for family and friends. Growing beautiful orchids and other flowers also became a passion. When he was not gardening, you would see him in his garage building lawn ornaments or planters. In the winter, he happily hooked rugs. Walking around the neighbor hood with his dog Buddy, visiting with all the neighbors was also a favourite pastime. Peter's strong-willed personality always made for lively conversations with family and friends. He loved to tease people and make them laugh.
