Garry Hoglund Obituary

Mr. Garry Wayne Hoglund of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Vellrie Hoglund, passed away peacefully in the presence of his devoted family in Calgary at Foothills Medical Centre on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the age of 80 years.

Garry leaves behind his most loving wife of 57 years Vellrie; 2 daughters Shannon (Bernie) and Shelley, and the apples of his eyes, his 5 grandchildren, Ethan (Tara), McCauley (Madison), Codie (Cole). Tess (Denton), and Beth, as well as 5 great grandchildren, Layken, Wylder, Bennett, Jackson and Booker. His grandchildren thought he hung the moon; his daughters knew for a fact that he did.

He is survived by his brothers Ken, Marvin (Gaynor), Jack (Judy), Ben (Darlene) Hoglund, Ruth Wright, Jack Wright, Eileen (Keith) Schwindt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who all loved him beyond measure.

He is predeceased by his parents Alice and Ernest Hoglund; brother Neil Hoglund; sister Kathleen Fox; brother-in-law Merv Fox; nephew Dale Fox; sister-in-law Beverley Hoglund; as well as mother-in-law Bess Wright and brother in law Jim Wright.

Garry was born on June 6, 1941, in Claresholm, Alberta and was raised surrounded by a noisy loving family, the painfully shy middle child, on the farm west of Granum. He went to school in Granum, but times were hard, and he left school after the eighth grade to start work. After working in Calgary, he met the love of his life Vellrie on his 23rd birthday. They married in November of 1964 and in 1967, with two-year-old Shannon in tow they left Calgary for Fort Macleod where he ventured into a life long and proud career of trucking with his brothers. Shelley arrived a few months after the move. During the years trucking he worked for Vanee Livestock, Lambs Trucking, Butte Grain Merchants, DeGraaf Excavating and City Packers. He has travelled more than 2 million miles by the time he hung up his keys for good at the age of 75. He was widely known and respected as a professional in the career that he loved.

Garry and Vellrie relocated  to Lethbridge in 1988 and continued his career until retired in 2017. In 2000 they moved to their final home on the farm of his daughter and son-in-law. Garry spent many many hours mowing law, looking after his yard and tinkering on vehicles with his brothers up until his passing. He took great pride in having a tidy yard and his tool box was always organized.

Thank you to the amazing team of nurses and doctors at the Foothills Hospital (unit 46) for your care and compassion during the last days of his life. Your genuine concern for him and his family was exceptional and so appreciated.
