Everett Vandesteeg Obituary

Everett Vandesteeg of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved husband of Lana Vandesteeg, passed away at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at the age of 78 years.

Everett is survived by his wife of 48 years; daughter Sherry (James) Heather and grandchildren Lisa Marie (Adam) Brzezinki and Jesse Campbell. Everett is also survived by his sisters Clasiena (John) Kellow, Ida Westbrook; brothers Ben and Gerrit (Georgette) as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Everett was predeceased by his parents Marinus and Christine as well as his brother Murray.

Everett was born in Holland on May 12, 1941 and immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings in 1956. After several years working for Haney Farms and the Lethbridge and District Exhibition, Everett became the owner and manager in 1975 of a small neighborhood store – The Grocery Hut. Everett loved his business and the neighborhood around it, making many friends over the years. After suffering an illness in 1991 that left him with chronic pain, he sold the store and devoted himself, as best he could, to the care of his mother Christine, until her passing, his wife and their precious fur-kids – Sandy, Peppy, Ladybug, Sheba, Shadow and most recently, Anthony, Caesar and Cleopatra (aka the Triplets).

Everett was a private, quiet man. He had a passion for hobbies he started as a young boy in Holland and engaged in until recently – movie trivia, stamp collecting, soccer and reading everything he could get his hands on. He loved non-fiction books related to history, politics, religion, sociology, and psychology, with a generous amount of pulp-fiction mysteries thrown in. In his adult years, Everett also excelled at painting complex paint-by-numbers, all of which grace the walls of their home, with a few gifted to special people.

In accordance with Everett’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. For those wishing to honor Everett’s memory, you are invited to donate to the Lethbridge and District Humane Society, 2920 16 Ave N, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1H 5E9, or a charity of your choice. Floral or other tributes are respectfully and gratefully declined.

Lana and Everett’s family are immensely grateful for the kindness and care provided to Everett over the years by Dr. Mark Horne and staff at the Bigelow Fowler East Clinic, as well as recently by the incredible team of compassionate doctors, nurses and care aides at St. Michael’s Palliative Care.
