Anthony (Tony) Horvath Obituary

Anthony (Tony) Horvath, beloved husband of Angelika (Angie) Horvath died in Lethbridge on Tuesday, March 2, 2022 at the age of 91. First born of Antal and Margaret Horvath (nee Csokea) on January 24, 1931, at Srbonran, Yugoslavia, also known as St. Thomas, Hungary, Tony was a proud Hungarian and cherished his heritage.

As a young man, Anthony immigrated to Canada with his treasured violin under one arm and a small suitcase under the other, seeking a promising future. His musical talents were quickly recognized and provided novel opportunities and connections throughout his lifetime.

In the early fifties, Tony met Angelika Kieselbach in Lethbridge, and promptly fell in love. They married in 1954 at St. Patrick Church, commemorating nearly 68 years together.  This union produced four daughters: Valeria, Margaret, Angelika and Elizabeth.

A devoted husband and father, Tony provided for his family through hard work as a labourer, employed at Ellison Mills and later at Canadian Dressed Meats. He was known for his reliability, tenacity and precision.

Anthony engaged in many interests and through the decades he enjoyed soccer, photography, bartending, dancing, acting in theatrical plays, winemaking, beekeeping, lapidary, collecting stamps, coins and more. His greatest love however, was music.

Tony was a fine violinist and played in the Lethbridge Symphony as a charter member for several years. He enthusiastically played hundreds of Hungarian Folksongs, eventually forming Magjarnota Harmas, (aka the Hungarian Trio) with fellow musicians Lajos Szilasi and Laci Kurtos, performing at numerous community events. His love of music was passed to his children, ensuring they all received formal training and encouragement over the years.

Tony is a lifetime member of the Lethbridge Hungarian Old-timers Club, a charter member of the Hungarian Cultural Society of Southern Alberta, a long-time member of the RockHounds, a Knights of Columbus Council #1490 member, and was installed as a Fourth Degree in the Father Lacombe Assembly.

Anthony is survived and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Angelika and their four daughters:  Valeria Lazzaretto (Lethbridge) and her children; Danille Lazzaretto-Green (Jeff), Marina Lazzaretto (New York City), and Adam (Jessica) Lazzaretto (Calgary).  Margaret (Terry) Miller (Edmonton) and her children; Ilyan Amadeus (Danielle) Lorieau- Peruch, and Ambyr (fiancé Casey) Miller. Angelika (Ken) Enns (Drumheller) and her children; Lancelot Horvath-Enns, Andrew (Alyshia) Enns, and Lorraine Seright.  Elizabeth (Jim) Desroches (Calgary) and her children; Mark (Ellie) Micklich (Edmonton), Amanda (Geordie) Turner, and Stephanie (Paul) Snider. In addition, Tony and Angie are blessed with 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. Tony is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Leo (Bev) Kieselbach (Lethbridge), John Szabo (Calgary), and his sister, Valerie (Matt) Lutter (Stirling), as well as several nieces and nephews.

He now joins his parents, granddaughter, Bryna-Jayne Miller-Butler, and sister-in-law, Hilda Szabo in eternal slumber.
