Peter Markus passed away peacefully on Friday, December 6, 2019 in Lethbridge, Alberta at the age of 89 years. Pete was born at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge to Karl and Mary Markus on July 25, 1930 the fifth in a family of six children.
Pete was raised on the farm in the Nobleford area. He was a cadet in his teen years and that is where his love of airplanes began, and he later obtained his pilot’s license. Later his love for airplanes took him to Reno for the air races. Flying planes was a true love for him.
Pete followed in the footsteps of his brothers and purchased his own big rig and began hauling for Noble Cultivators. His trucking career spanned 50 years.
Pete’s next calling was his love for horses and the old west way of life. That is when Old West Stables and his cowboy ways became his life. Always involved in Whoop Up Days, parading his loud and smokey truck in the annual parade.
In his later years Pete lived in Picture Butte, volunteering with the Prairie Tractor Club. Pete’s final years were spent in Lethbridge and his final destination was St. Therese, where he enjoyed his last couple of years. Always at the door waiting to chat with whoever would lend an ear. He always had a story or two, or three of his life escapades, which were always interesting.
Pete is survived by his sisters Hilda (Lloyd) and Clara; sisters-in-law Hazel and Alveda; closest niece and nephews, Lorraine, Donny and Dwane; as well as many, many other nieces and nephews. Pete was predeceased by his brothers, Hank, Albert and Karl.
A Celebration of his Life will be announced and held at a later date.
