Southern Alberta has changed in a hundred ways since 1907. The Oldman River still bends the same way through the coulees. And families here still gather, still grieve, still hold one another close — the way they always have.

Through all of it, Martin Brothers has been here. Not as a name on a street corner, but as neighbours — the people you would see at the rink, in the checkout line, in the pew beside you.

We have never seen our years as something we earned the right to. We see them as a privilege — the quiet trust of being invited into a family's story at the moment it matters most. Everything we do begins there.

Our Founding Story

Benjamin Bennifer Martin, the founder, came to Lethbridge with his family in 1904. In 1907 he began working with T.S. Fetterly in the funeral business. Benjamin attended the Cincinnati College of Embalmers, where he studied and obtained his license. When WWI broke out, he returned to England to serve in the forces, returning to Lethbridge in 1919, where he worked once again with T.S. Fetterly.

Ben’s younger brother Harry Martin came to Lethbridge in 1922 to join Ben in the funeral profession. They purchased T.S. Fetterly firm, which then became Martin Brothers Funeral Services, located on the corner of 4th Ave. and 6th Street South, later moving to 812-3rd Ave. South.

In 1961 Ben’s sons Derek.H.B. Martin and Dale Arthur Martin, purchased the funeral home from their father and uncle. In 1968 they began expanding and built the Memorial Chapel on the corner of 7th Ave. and 13 Street North. Today, four generations have established Martin Brothers Funeral Services’ legacy in Southern Alberta.

Jack and Will Martin

Heritage is not a museum. It is a living commitment, carried now by Jack and Will Martin — the newest hands in an unbroken chain that reaches back more than a century.

They grew up understanding a simple truth: a hundred years of history means little if it does not bring a family peace today. So they have held fast to the things that matter — plain, honest conversation, and complete transparency about cost, so that no family ever feels alone with a decision, or unsure of what lies ahead.

Around them stands a team who share the same belief — that our work is to carry the weight of the details, so your family is free to simply be together. To grieve. To remember. To hold one another close.

Honouring Tradition, Shaping the Farewell

The generations shift, and so do the ways we say goodbye. A century has taught us the truest skill of all — to hold a family's oldest traditions in one hand, while shaping something entirely their own with the other.

For some families across Lethbridge, that means a traditional burial, rich with ritual. For others, a simple, intimate cremation — quiet and unhurried. And for others still, a celebration of a life fully lived: a backyard, a favourite song, a table of stories told late into the evening.

Whatever the shape of the farewell, the care beneath it never changes. Every choice is met with the same reverence, the same attention to the small, ordinary moments that made a life extraordinary.
