RUBY OYE passed away peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital on November 21, 2022 at the age of 92 years.
Ruby was born in Strawberry Hill, BC in 1930, the sixth of eight children of Masajiro and Tsuya Nagamori. Her family was relocated to rural Manitoba sugar beet farms in 1942, and eventually settled in Winnipeg. Ruby met Tatsumi (Richard) Oye through the Manitoba Buddhist Church youth social club. They married in 1953 and moved to Thunder Bay, ON in 1955 where they were avidly involved in the Lakehead Japanese Cultural Association, Seniors Club and Karaoke Club. Ruby cared for Richard for several years after a debilitating stroke, and after his passing, she moved to Lethbridge where she enjoyed living at The View at Lethbridge and later at Park Meadows Village.
Ruby sought out fun adventures such as impromptu motorcycle rides in Southern Alberta and horseback riding in Hawaii at the age of 80, concerts, dancing, singing, and any chance for a drive out in the country. She loved social activities, making friends, and spending time with family.
Ruby was predeceased by her husband, Richard; parents, Masajiro and Tsuya; and by siblings and their spouses, Mas and Aster Nagamori, Sid and Bette Nagamori, Bunny Nagamori, Mary and Bert Watkins, Ray Nagamori, Bruce Hashimoto, and Toru Hosaki. She is survived by her brother Tad Nagamori, sisters Faye Hashimoto and Lily Hosaki, and two daughters and their spouses, Janine Oye and Tick Kariya, and Deanna Oye and Michel Carbonneau.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Emergency ward of Chinook Regional Hospital, as well as to the wonderful staff of Park Meadows Village for giving such excellent care to Ruby over the years.
Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapel. Ruby’s life will be celebrated with her family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Good Samaritan Park Meadows Village, 1511 15 Avenue North, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1H 1W2 or to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
