Norma Baker Obituary

Mrs. Norma Baker, beloved wife of the late Mr. Aylmer Baker, passed in her sleep and went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at the age of 82 years.

Norma was born in Drumheller on October 29, 1938.  The oldest of two daughters born to Andrew and Gertie Barnes, Norma lived on the farm in Carbon until 1941.  After four years of either hail or drought, the family purchased and moved to the Barnes homestead east of Granum.  This is where Norma spent most of her life.

She married Aylmer on November 17, 1956 at the Barnes house where Norma lived. In the fall of 1961, they settled in the home where they were married and where they lived and farmed for 59 years.  They had five children … Layne, Brant, Sherry, Barry and Carol Ann.  They were very close, doing everything together, and after 63 years of marriage inseparable until Aylmer’s passing earlier this year.

A farmer’s wife, Norma worked hard all her life.  She loved milk cows and convinced Aylmer to fill the barn so she could milk and sell the cream.  When she wasn’t busy with farm work, she loved to bake, garden and knit.  She also loved to go fishing with Aylmer and her family.  Norma very much enjoyed spending time with her children & grandchildren, and going to all their sporting, 4-H and musical activities.

Norma battled cancer for a number of years and her eyesight failed her as well.  Her journey over the last few years was difficult.  She faced it with courage, incredible will & faith, and through it all with such amazing grace.

Besides her five children, Norma is survived by her twelve grandchildren Joshua, Jessica (Layne & Donna Baker),  Jordan, Branden, Wyatt (Brant & Laurie Baker), Kyle, Darren, Evan (Sherry & Lawrence Vandervalk),  Alysha, Joey (Barry & Teresa Baker), Kaylee, Colin (Carol Ann & Allen Zoeteman); and ten great-grandchildren.  Norma is also survived by her sister Mary Fyffe (Stewart).

Besides her loving husband Aylmer, Norma was predeceased by her parents Gertie and Andrew.

Interment will take place at the Granum Christian Reformed Church Cemetery on Wednesday, December 23, 2020.

A private Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm at Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel, 610, 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Pastor Henry Veldboom, officiating.
