Marilyn May Gloer of Lethbridge, beloved wife of Dale Gloer, passed away peacefully at 81 years of age on October 31, 2023, after a lengthy illness. A special thank you to the staff at St. Therese Villa who provided such loving care and support in her final days.
Marilyn was born on March 19, 1942, to Allen and May Phair in Yellowknife, NWT. That same year the family moved to Kimberley, BC and later, to Marysville, BC. Marilyn always enjoyed participating in music activities and played clarinet in the school band. Her family attended a small church in Marysville where she played piano and organ through her high school years. While attending various churches, Marilyn found pleasure in singing with the church choirs. After high school, she studied at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Education and went on to teach elementary grades in Fort St. John and Cranbrook, BC and later, in Ottawa, ON. Marilyn and Dale were married on August 21, 1971, when their first child arrived, she became a stay-at-home mom until their youngest child was in middle school. When she decided to return to the workforce, Marilyn pursued further education to enable her to teach English as a Second Language (ESL). She then taught Adult ESL for a number of years while living in Ontario. After retiring and moving to Lethbridge, Marilyn continued to teach ESL as a volunteer tutor through the Lethbridge Public Library’s Read On Program. Marilyn went to the Ukraine several times to teach ESL to university students during the summer session. And lastly, at the Evangelical Free Church of Lethbridge, where Marilyn was an active member, she lent her skills in ESL to a program called English Conversation Cafe.
Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, Allen and May Phair; her sister-in-law, Val Phair; and nephew, John Robert McArthur.
She is survived by her loving husband Dale Gloer; her daughter Lana (Grant) Wilkinson and their daughters Abigail and Elizabeth, son Kevin (Joy) Gloer and their son Kieran; son Ryan; her sister Marie (Dan) McArthur; brother Bill Phair, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
