Kurt Ruff Obituary

Mr. Kurt Ruff, beloved spouse of Mrs. Kay Ruff, passed away peacefully in the arms of his wife and daughter on Saturday, March 28, 2020 after a short, courageous battle with cancer.

Kurt is lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Kay; daughter Kathy (Steven) Doyle; grandson’s Matthew (Caitlyn) Horvath and Riley Horvath; brother Edmund (Luba) Ruff; sisters Ruth (Helmut) Schock, Monica (Brian) Been and Annette (Les) Barker; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Kurt has been welcomed home by his parents, Gottliebe and Alexander Ruff; stepmother Olga Ruff and brother-in-law Helmut Schock. Kurt was born as one of fraternal triplets and will be rejoining his sister Erica and his brother Horst.

Kurt was born on April 16, 1942 in Graudenz, Germany with his family fleeing during war times, settling temporarily in Löchgau until having the opportunity to immigrate to Canada in 1955.

Kurt had a range of interests and talents from sports such as handball and soccer, to a love of nature, walking the rivers and fishing. His enthusiasm for sports and the outdoors were taught to his grandchildren who now know how to kick a soccer ball with both feet and how to set the hook to bring in that big fish.

Kurt was employed at the Lethbridge Iron Works for 35 years; after retirement, he continued to enjoy annual fishing trips with coworkers who had grown into lifetime friends. When Kurt was not fishing or mentoring his grandchildren, he enjoyed annual visits to the shores of the Hawaiian Beaches and deep sea fishing. Kurt was a long time member of the German Canadian Club and in addition to the dinners and dances, enjoyed participation in the Hubertus group each Wednesday evening. Kurt enjoyed singing and over the years, increasingly volunteered to sing at wedding and memorial events, to residents of the Sunny South Lodge in Coaldale and at his church, Christ Trinity Lutheran.

Due to the recent restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 virus, a Celebration of Kurt’s Life will be held at a later date, which will be announced when determined.
