Irene Walker

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Irene Rose Walker on Sunday, August 20, 2023. 

Left to treasure her memory and remember her legacy are her three children David (Diane), Donald (Rita) and Sharon (Howard); five grandchildren Candace (Marc), Geoffrey (Haley), Devan, Brett (Olivia), and Megan; and four great-grandchildren Isabella, Charlotte, Noah, and Jacob; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and relatives.  Irene was predeceased by her husband Dave; and infant son, Patrick. 

Irene was born and raised in the Wrentham area and was one of ten siblings born to Michael and Rosa Mueller.  After marrying her husband and lifelong partner, Dave in 1948, they settled in Medicine Hat where David, Donald and Patrick were born.  Dave’s career involved moving a number of times including Red Deer, Calgary and then back to Medicine Hat where Sharon was born. 

The family moved to Fort McMurray in 1966 and to Edmonton in 1968.  Dave and Irene then moved to Lethbridge in 1980 for work and to transition into their retirement years.  They returned to Edmonton in 2014 to be closer to family and lived at the Lewis Estates Retirement Residence until their passing. 

Irene was a vibrant, outgoing person who made friends easily and loved to entertain, dance, and spend time with family.  She loved to travel whether it was cruising; vacations to Europe, the Caribbean and Australia; or land tours in Canada and the U.S.  After retirement, Irene and Dave spent the winter months traveling in their motor home to Arizona. 

After her children were older, Irene held several secretarial and executive assistant positions such as the Dean of Engineering’s Office at the University of Alberta, the Dean’s Office at the University of Lethbridge and as a volunteer at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. 

Irene loved to play bridge and other card games, curling, hiking and shuffleboard.  She also shared her enjoyment of golf with Dave, and they spent many hours on the golf course with friends and family.  Irene was quite accomplished at paper tole and brought a fashionable flair to all aspects of a life well lived.  She will be dearly missed.

A Memorial Service and “Celebration of Life” will be held at 10:00 am, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 - 4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. We are inviting everyone who knew Irene and Dave to attend.
