BELOVED MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, AUNT AND FRIEND
Hilma Hellwig passed away peacefully at St. Therese Villa on March 21, 2023 at the age of 90 years.
Hilma was born in Warwarowka Ukraine on October 10, 1932 to Eduard and Emilie Besler, the second oldest of five children. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1952, settling in Stirling Alberta where she worked the sugar beets before becoming a nurse’s aide at the Galt Hospital in Lethbridge, then continuing nursing in Kelowna for several years.
Upon returning to Lethbridge, she met her husband Heinz and relocated to Calgary where they were blessed with two children, first a daughter Rose and then a son Ron. They remained in Calgary until moving to a farm outside Picture Butte where a second son Edward was born. In 1979 Hilma moved to Lethbridge and started working at the Majorette Restaurant as a cashier until she retired in 1989.
Hilma loved crocheting beautiful doilies, baskets, tablecloths and afghans, which she loved gifting to others. Her green thumb was evident in her flowers and vegetable garden, particularly her cucumbers and huge tomatoes. She also loved spending time with her three grandchildren, Shari, Blaine, and Amanda and her two great granddaughters Brynli and Paityn.
She is survived by her daughter Rose (Don) Daugherty, Ron (Valerie) Hellwig, Ed Hellwig, grandchildren Shari (Caleb) Cossette, Blaine Daugherty, and Amanda Hellwig, great granddaughters Brynli and Paityn Cossette, along with numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Hilma is predeceased by her parents, younger brother Ewald Besler, younger sister Almira Schinkel, and one great granddaughter Jada Cossette.
A private Interment will take place prior to the memorial service.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta. A live stream will also be available through the Martin Brothers website.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Therese Villa, 253 Southgate Blvd S, Lethbridge, AB T1K 2S1, would be welcomed.
