Hilda Dick Obituary

Ms. Hilda Dick of Lethbridge, formerly of Coaldale, passed away peacefully at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at the age of 94 years.

Hilda was born on May 4, 1927 in a simple farm building on a farmyard six miles southeast of Coaldale, Alberta. Having arrived a half hour after her twin brother Walter, she officially became the eighth child in the Johann and Liese Dick family - a family that eventually numbered five girls and eight boys. Her seven older siblings became her mentors and models, equipping her well to become a mentor and model to her five younger siblings.

Hilda was always busy, whether it was striping a currant bush of it’s beautiful ripe berries and scattering them on the ground (her twin brother was in on this also) or much later teaching Sunday school, doing the laundry or attending to patients in the Coaldale Hospital. She was  eventually employed on staff at the Coaldale Medical Clinic where she worked for 34 years. She always thought of others- her many nieces and nephews can attest to this as they reminisce of Christmas and birthdays past.

Hilda’s siblings remember with gratitude Hilda’s loving care for their parents in their senior years, particularly their mother for whom she cared for 24 years until she passed away at 101 years of age. An incident that occurred when mother in her mid nineties gives a glimpse of the relationship that existed between Hilda and mother. One night Hilda was awakened by mother anxiously calling “Hilda! Hilda!”. Hilda went to mothers’ bed to calm her and determined there was nothing seriously wrong and went back to bed. Again, she was awakened “Hilda! Hilda!” and again, Hilda got up to calm her mother then returned to bed for some much-deserved sleep. The third time Hilda’s patience was wearing thin “Mother, there is nothing wrong with you and I have to work in the morning. I don’t want to hear you call my name again tonight!” Ten minutes later Hilda heard mother softly singing “I need you, oh I need you, every hour I need you” but she didn’t call Hilda’s name again that night.  Following her mother’s death, Hilda continued to service people that needed friends, one of them being her last surviving sister, Louise Allert, whom she joined in the Black Rock Senior’s Lodge in Lethbridge 2012. Subsequently Louise moved to Fairmont Extendicare in Lethbridge where Hilda continued to visit whenever possible until Louise’s passing More recently she was also able to visit her sister in law Margaret Dick in Extendicare.

Hilda leaves to mourn her passing 3 brothers Walter, Jake and Alfred; four in laws and a host of nieces and nephews many of whom joined to pay a special tribute of gratitude to her in Coaldale after Hilda had turned 90
