Eda Scroggie Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Eda Scroggie has peacefully passed away at the age of 88 on the evening of September 19, 2020, at the Chinook Regional Hospital with family at her side, two days short of her 89th birthday.

She is survived by her five children Gayle (Alvin) Kolibar, Doug (Laurel) Scroggie, Laura Duder, Joyce (Tony) Farough, and Lisa Scroggie; grandchildren Melissa (Rorik), Stephanie (Jesse), Daniel (Kristan), Tamara, Alexander, Katharine, David, and Kyle, as well as great-grandchildren Mady, Reston, Morgan, Rylan, Caira, Satariah, Tayven, Ravenna, Presley, and Bridget. Also left to mourn her passing are Eda’s younger siblings Ezio (Sophie) Gardin, and Maxine Richards, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

Eda was predeceased by her parents Gemma and Silvio Gardin; brother-in-law Owen Richards, as well as sisters-in-law Marjorie Pontarolo, and Jolayne Van Der Hulst.

Eda was born in a farmhouse in Coalhurst on September 21, 1931 after her parents Gemma and Silvio Gardin emigrated from northern Italy. She attended Catholic schools in Lethbridge, then worked at the Metropolitan department store before marrying her sweetheart Gordon Scroggie on June 14, 1952 and having their five children together. During this time Eda began her career as a custodian, including a 27 year long position at the University of Lethbridge, and volunteering with the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

After retiring, Eda spent quality time with her grandchildren, taking pleasure in teaching them crib, drinking red Martini & Rossi in her coffee, and handing out candy at Halloween with her grand-babies, who adoringly remember her as their Nona. Some of the best things she will be remembered for are the recipes she passed along for a secret meat sauce, a special summer salad dubbed ‘Nona Salad,’ and the canederli that nobody else could make just the way she liked it best. As she shrank into a smaller, older vecchia, Eda always drove her Cadillac with pride before choosing a seat with the best view of everyone around her, and began trash-talking anyone who would try to beat her at crib. With an unwavering affinity for singing and dancing, never minding how off key or out of time she became as the years wore on, Eda stayed sharp witted for as long as possible, quick to bring on a laugh and make sure the people who cared felt the love she had to give. She will forever be loved and missed.

A Private Memorial Service will be held at 3:30pm on Friday, September 25, 2020.

The family would like to give special thanks to the dedicated staff at Garden View Lodge, as well as the palliative care team at CRH for their kindness and compassion whilst caring for Eda. For that we are truly grateful.

It would be appreciated that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Eda’s behalf to the Alzheimer Society at 1202 2 Ave S, #40, Lethbridge, AB, T1J 0E3, or to a charity of your choice.
