Connie Fettig Obituary

Connie Fettig (nee Vervalcke) passed away on April 11, 2021 in Medicine Hat at the age of 100 years.

Connie will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her four children Sandra, Maxine (Phil), Len (Diane), and Fran; grandchildren Kyle (Christine), Ryan (Julie), Zoë (Ben); great grandchildren Rachel, Briea, Elise, Kellan and Rayelle. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Martin; daughter in law Karen; son in law Andrew and seven siblings.

Connie was born in Meyronne, Sask on November 19, 1920 to Belgium immigrants. Times were tough, but there was plenty of love and laughter.  A lifelong reader, Connie could reliably be found with her nose in a book - earning her the moniker “Big Book” as a child.  Upon completion of Grade 12, she took a secretarial course at Balfour Tech in Regina, and then worked at Simpson Sears.

In 1947, Connie married her sweetheart, Martin.  Together they farmed in the Grassy Lake Alberta area, raising their four children.  Connie was an exceptional mother.  She excelled at cooking, baking and sewing, making all her childrens’clothes.  Her love of reading enhanced her eloquent diction, which she put to work writing poems, family reunion tributes, as well as entering (and winning) jingle contests.

Connie and Martin retired to the Okanagan Valley, happily spending over thirty years there.  Connie was active in their church, community, and local bowling alley.  She was a lover of card games, especially canasta, which they regularly played with friends.  Connie was a devoted fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and looked forward to baseball season each year.  It was during this time that her and Martin also travelled.  Trips to Belgium were a highlight as well as seventeen bus tours.

Connie was a fashionista!  She loved dressing up and her ensemble always had accessories to match! But above all else, Connie had an enduring relationship with God.  He was her mainstay throughout her life.  She was so ready to meet her Savior and be reunited with Martin and her family and friends who have gone on before.

The light she has brought to our lives will continue to live on and we will remember her whenever we have a good laugh - which was her greatest pleasure of all!

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
