Winston was born on March 15, 1942, the only child of Bethyl (Bowerman) and Walter Newman. He grew up on a farm north of Eldersley, Saskatchewan, attending Clashmoor Country School as a child. Following his graduation from Tisdale Unit Composite School, he attended an agricultural mechanical course in Moose Jaw where he learned a number of trades. Growing up, Winston worked alongside his parents on the farm, and took over farming operations following his father’s death in 1968.

Winston met Alice (Kindrachuk), the love of his life, on New Year’s Eve in 1966. Their destinies were solidified after dancing the night away together. Their long-distance relationship continued by phone, Canada Post and Winston’s visits to Kelvington once Alice moved there to teach. They were married by Reverend Harvey Clarke on August 3, 1968 at St. Paul’s United Church in Tisdale, and soon welcomed three children; daughters Wendy, in 1971, and Laura, in 1973, and son Tavis, in 1976. Winston and Alice raised their three “wonderful children” (his words) on the farm, teaching them the value and reward of hard work. Winston expressed that his fondest memories were “getting married, the birth of his children and watching them grow up, their involvement in sports and graduating, the birth of his grandchildren, and watching crops grow”.

Winston enjoyed coffee time at the local grain elevator, camping with friends and relatives, curling, golf, reading, performing in community theatre, singing in St. Paul’s church choir, attending various arts performances, and watching his children and grandchildren perform in their various activities. He served as president of St. Paul’s United church board and on the RM council, was a longtime member of Tisdale Credit Union board of directors and enjoyed the fellowship of the Oddfellows Brotherhood. Winston was a jack of all trades, including plumbing, electrical work, building and welding and mechanics. He could fix or build just about anything. He was also a particularly skilled carpenter whose projects included such things as a greenhouse for Alice, a catamaran, items of furniture, and a child’s sleigh and rocking horses for his grandchildren. Winston will be greatly missed for his generous and giving spirit, his fun-loving nature, his storytelling, and his wonderful sense of humour.

Besides his loving wife, Alice, Winston is survived by his two daughters, Wendy (Murray) Anhorn, and Laura (Ryan) Melin, and his son, Tavis (Chryslyn); his nine grandchildren: Tate, Isaac, Seth and Cassia Anhorn; Caleb, Chloe and Jenevieve Melin; and Aleksander and Maverik Newman; his first cousins Anne (Roger) Hughes, Bev Leach, Colin (Maureen) Bowerman, Deanna Gupta (Sam), Camelia (Ed) Lypchuk, Doug (Lorraine) Newman, and Dale (Suzanne) Newman; sister in law Mary Stachniak, brother-in-law Jim Varga, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Bethyl Newman, and a sister who was stillborn.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm, on Monday July 31, 2023, at McKillop United Church, 2329 15 Ave S, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Bob Wallace officiating. To watch the service via livestream, please go to https://www.mckillopunited.ca/funerals
