Grace Voorhorst

Official Obituary of

9/5/1933 - to - 30/12/2008

""How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty!
My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God."" Psalm 84:1,2

In His infinite wisdom, on Tuesday, December 30, 2008, God called home His child, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Geertje (Grace) Voorhorst, at the age of seventy-five.

Mom was born on May 9, 1933 in Stadskanaal, the Netherlands. Mom had two older brothers and ten younger brothers and sisters. Her brothers and sisters often spoke of the fact that she was like a second ""mother"" to them. They have many fond memories of Grace caring for them.

Grace immigrated to Canada with her parents and her twelve siblings in 1952. In 1954 she married Jack Voorhorst and the LORD blessed them with five children. We have very fond memories of Mom's care for each one of us as we were growing up. In her later years she also spent much time looking after her mom, our Opoe, who spent quite a number of years in the Sunny South Lodge and, of course, the last few months of Dad's life she was also able to be his ""nurse"" when he was unable to do all that he wanted. The last three years were often quite difficult for her as she was alone, but even during that time she found the time to care for and help others where she could.

Geertje (Grace) Voorhorst is survived by her children John (Jenny) Voorhorst, Grace Marko, Henry (Haidee) Voorhorst, Harry (Joanne) Voorhorst, Jim (Zan) Voorhorst, as well as twenty-four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She also leaves behind her brothers and sisters Henk (Alice) Tams, Klaas (Hilda) Tams, Amy (Richard) Veldkamp, John (Dorothy) Tams, Rika (Dick) Hoogerdyk, Dieta (Joe) VanSpronsen, Mary (George) VanBostelen, Joan (Douwe) Postma, Fritz (Betty) Tams, and Ella (Dave) Cameron, two sisters in law, Hilda (Lloyd) Bredenhof and Gerda Tams as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Grace was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jack Voorhorst, her parents, Harm and Geessien Tams, her brothers Jake and Rolly Tams, and her granddaughter Kelsey Voorhorst.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 7:00pm and 8:00pm, Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the Canadian Reformed Church in Coaldale.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am, on Monday, January 5, 2009 at the CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH, Coaldale, AB, with Rev. D. Poppe officiating. Interment will follow in the Coaldale Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined.
