Julius Urban

Official Obituary of

16/4/1933 - to - 21/10/2024

Mr. Julius John Urban of Shaughnessy & Picture Butte, beloved husband of Mrs. Lorna Urban, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2024, at the age of 91 and ½ years.

Julius was born in Throne, Alberta on April 16, 1933, to Elek and Emma Urban, the fourth child of five. He was a man who did a variety of things in this lifetime: he farmed (on the home place and on the Blood Reserve), he was also an auctioneer and liked to go to auction sales to buy, fix up and sell machinery. He had many interests which included dancing (where he met Lorna in September of 1970), he loved to travel (mostly around Alberta delivering machinery to clients as well as to B.C, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and parts of the U.S.A; holidays in the U.S; playing cards; reading books on antique vehicles and several papers; going to car shows; he built a horseless carriage which the family used to go to and from school with neighbors.  He and a friend put a motor in it and entered it into many parades from Calgary to small towns in Southern Alberta, winning many prizes for the subject of the year. He took a meat butcher course and was a bench chemist in the Picture Butte Sugar Factory from 1951 to 1958.

Besides his loving wife Lorna, Julius is survived by 2 sisters Victoria Sander of Lethbridge and Anne Hadford of Calgary and their families; niece Leanne (Darryl) Warner of Calgary; nephew Gary Coleman of Red Deer; 2 brothers in law Barry Coleman and family of Winnipeg; and Clare Coleman and family of Sherwood Park.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elek (1975) and Emma (2005); brother Alec (1998); sister Irene (2023); and niece Terry Hadford (2024) of Maple Ridge, B.C.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 762 Crescent Avenue, Picture Butte, Alberta, with Father Ian Gagne, celebrant.

Interment will follow at Archmount Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Lethbridge, 1202 2 Ave S #40, Lethbridge, AB T1J 0E3; or Stars Foundation, 1441 Aviation Park, NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 8M7.
