STEVE GEORGE SZIGLI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the age of 95 years. He was surrounded by his loving family, at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital, after a brave struggle from complications of a hip surgery.
Besides his loving wife Rose of 70 years, Steve is survived by his six children, son Ken (Doreen), his daughters Darlene Delorme, Dianne (Jim) Rediker, Roseanne (Larry) Tucker, son Lloyd (Eunice) and David, as well as his 14 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 brothers and 1 sister. He was predeceased by his parents Steve and Julia Szigli, 2 daughters "Little Annie" and Shirley Green, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
Steve was born on March 27, 1913 in Lestock, Saskatchewan and was the eldest of 12 children. He met the love of his life Rose at a church function and they married on November 8, 1938. They farmed in Lestock, SK until 1943. They then moved to the Taber area and worked on sugar beet and grain farms. In the winter months he worked in the coal mines and later at the Taber Sugar Factory. Steve loved farming and bought his own farm and built his home near Purple Springs. He farmed there until he semi retired in 1974 and moved to Lethbridge. He continued his love of farming and was very proud of his vegetable and flower garden. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Steve was an avid bowler and received several awards.
Steve was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his family and loved family gatherings, especially seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Since Steve was "Jack of all trades", he was eager and loved to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbours and never wanted anything in return. He had a heart of gold. He touched many hearts and he will be sadly missed.
Vigil Rites (Prayers) will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, February 20, 2009 at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 - 4 Street South, Lethbridge.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 - 12 Ave South, Lethbridge, with Father Tim Boyle celebrant. A Private Family Interment will be held at the Taber Cemetery.
In memory of Steve, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 207-5427 Street South, Lethbridge, Alberta T1J 2H1.
