Mrs. Shig Sakamoto, born Oikawa, of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Kingo Sakamoto, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on December 14, 2023.

Shig was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. Shig and Kingo settled in Lethbridge, where they were married on November 20, 1948, and raised their family. Shig will be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Rob Sakamoto, Shae-Lynn Sakamoto, Karyn Ormston (Kyle), Jessica Sakamoto, and Lisa Sakamoto Hakkarainen (Jessy).

Among Shig’s other hobbies, she enjoyed spending her time with her great-grandchildren: Sierra, Peyton, Callie, Noah, Hadley, and Hudson. She is also survived by her brother, Ken Oikawa (Jackie), numerous nieces and nephews, and many loving friends.

Shig was a passionate golfer, curler, bowler, and skier. She enjoyed spending her free time volunteering in the community and tending to her garden. She was also an avid dog lover and greatly treasured her time spent with friends’ and family’s dogs. Shig’s kind heart and witty personality will be deeply missed.

A Memorial Service for Shig will be held at 2:00 pm, on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Buddhist Temple of Southern Alberta, 470, 40 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Flowers and koden are gratefully declined. In lieu, memorial donations can be made to the Lethbridge & District Japanese Garden Society (P.O. Box 751, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1K 3Z6).
