Anastasia Sereda

Official Obituary of

15/11/1904 - to - 21/3/2010

MRS. ANASTASIA SEREDA of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Mr. Nikifor Sereda, passed away at Extendicare Lethbridge on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the age of 105 years.

Anastasia (nee Holoborscha) was born in Rimarivka, Hadyach, Ukraine on November 15, 1904. She received her primary and secondary education locally then moved to Kharkiv to pursue a post secondary career. In 1927 she married Nikifor Sereda. In Kharkiv, Anastasia studied medicine, but was forced to terminate her studies due to coups, conflicts and war. In 1941, a disintegrating Red Army left the family to the mercies of the advancing Nazis. The latter transported the family to a slave camp at Leoben, Austria where they were imprisoned until the War's end.

In 1948, Anastasia and family migrated to Alberta, living briefly in the McNally and Raymond areas before settling permanently on their Shaughnessy farm. Anastasia and Nikifor retired to Lethbridge, where Anastasia has resided continuously since 1964. She was a congregant of Holy Trinity and an active member of the Ukrainian Canadian community. Her passion was singing, gardening and being with her grandchildren.
Anastasia was predeceased by her parents Petro and Anisia, her husband Nikifor Sereda in 1993, as well as two sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her sons; Alexander (Mary) Sereda and Lloyd (Cheryll Oakes) Sereda, as well as her grandchildren; Leona (Kevin) Kraemer, Peter (Lori) Sereda, Zoia (Daryl) Schacher, Irene (Gordon) Schussler, Sara Sereda and Anastasia Sereda. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren; Jason, Kelly, Nicholas, Nathan, Nolan, Nevin, Deiryk, Jaylene, Clayton, Tanessa, Braeson, Christian, and Tomas.
Prayers will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at MARTIN BROS. RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 4th Street South, Lethbridge.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY, 643 13th Street North, Lethbridge, with Father Taras Krochak, celebrant.

Interment at Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, Alberta.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Lethbridge Branch, Box 197, Monarch, AB T0L 1M0, to be forwarded to St. Mary's Congregational Church in Rimarivka, Ukraine.
