1914-2008
Gertie Worth Rice of Cardston, most recently a resident of The View in Lethbridge, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2008 at the age of 93. One of six children born on a farm near Major, SK. Gertie married Paul Worth in1932 and together they had four children: Melva, Marlys and Garry (a son, Harvey, died in infancy). Paul's career with the Alberta Wheat Pool eventually led them to Cardston in 1953. Widowed in 1977, Gertie married Cardston rancher Fred Rice eight years later; they enjoyed several very happy years together until Fred's death in 1994.
Champion butter tart maker, ace bridge partner (and formidable opponent), voracious reader, current affairs pundit, undisputed family matriarch, devoted church member (St. Paul's Anglican), opinionated commentator, loyal Eastern Star member, avid picnicker, lover of good china tea cups, former librarian, unwavering supporter of all her family's many pursuits...most of all, Gertie was a devoted, generous, and actively involved mother, grandma and friend.
Celebrating a life well lived and grateful for all the lessons she drilled into us is her family. Children Melva Daley (married to Wallace, deceased in 2000); Marlys Hinman (married to Nolan, deceased in 1984) and Garry Worth, married to Anna. Grandchildren and their spouses are Daley family: Mona and Frank McIntyre, Doris and Bob Haysom, Mark and Janice Daley. Hinman family: Connie and Dan Henrie, Paul Hinman, Barbara and Clayton Orr. Worth family: John Worth, Stewart and Melanie Worth, Lloyd Worth, Dana and Daniel Martin. Gertie had 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. In both name and deed, she was ""Grandma Gertie"" to almost all who knew her.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at ST. AUGUSTINE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411-11 Street South, Lethbridge, with Canon Allan McCuaig officiating. Lunch immediately following. Interment at 2:30pm at Union Cemetery, Fort Macleod. All are welcome to everything.
If friends so wish, donations in Gertie's honour may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 724 - 13 Street North, Lethbridge, AB T1H 2T1 or to the charity of one's choice.
