George Price
Official Obituary of
15/9/1924 - to - 5/1/2007
GEORGE VAUGHAN PRICE, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away at the age of 82 years on Friday, January 5, 2007 at Chinook Regional Hospital surrounded by his family.
George is survived by his loving wife, Marie; three children, Tom (Arlene) Price, Darren (Marion) Price and Cindy Mason (Denny Morgan), all of Lethbridge, as well as his grandchildren: Kristen (David) Harding, Mark Mason, Jeffrey Price, Jason (Ildiko) Price and Allison and Danielle Price.
He also leaves behind his brother Roy (Violet) Price and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his parents, George Sr. and Hilda Price and special family friend Albert Maguire.
George was born in Lethbridge on September 15, 1924 at the Galt Hospital. In his youth he enjoyed sports, particularly hockey and fastball. He was a goalie and pitcher in the city men's league and also raced stock cars with his partner, Bill Connors, in the mid 1960s. Their green Hudson Hornet - No. 44 - was a fan favourite.
He loved the New York Yankees and the Toronto Maple Leafs, and even though it's been 40 years since the Leafs won the Stanley Cup, George was ever the optimist.
As a youngster George would often help his father - one of the city's first mechanics - at the family's automotive repair shop. He later followed in his dad's footsteps and became a mechanic himself, working for the City of Lethbridge Transit department for 35 years.
He met his wife, Marie, at the lunch counter of the old Lethbridge Arena and the two were married on May 10, 1950. Together they spent 56 years creating a home where the door was always open and friends were always welcome.
George was a bona fide collector of all things and rarely threw anything away.
A member of both the Southern Alberta Antique Classic Auto Club and the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club for more than 40 years, George was known to many as the ""Hudson King.""
He took great pride in his collection of Hudson cars and had around two dozen of them, including a rare 1953 Hollywood Hardtop. In the early 1980s he purchased his first Honda and over the years he's likely been one of the local dealership's best unofficial salesmen. Today there are many Hondas in the Price family.
In the mid 1970s George and his son, Tom, purchased a little house in Kalispell, Montana which continues to be a favourite spot for family holidays.
George and Marie spent a great deal of time fixing up the place and when there was no work to be done, George created his own special projects. He painted many pictures of his beloved Hudsons, which he hung along the fence, made quirky signs for the yard and forged lasting friendships with many of the neighbours.
George, like his father, lived by the Golden Rule and always did what he could to help others.
But nothing gave him more joy that his children and grandchildren. He was always the No. 1 fan of his sons' respective bands and enjoyed hearing them play at venues throughout the city. George was also quick to brag about his grandchildren and always eager to hear about their accomplishments. He was a true family man and friend.
With a larger-than-life personality George meant so many things to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects between 7:00PM and 8:00PM on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at MARTIN BROS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610 - 4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB.
