WINIFRED DORIS PARKINSON passed away peacefully on the 2nd day of February, 2012 with family by her side. Win was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Parkinson, her parents James and Margaret Whitehouse and her sister Florrie Glendenning.
Win was born in London, England on June 28, 1920. She was a war bride having met Gerald when he was stationed in England. They married in 1943 prior to Gerald being shipped out to occupied Europe. Their elder son Raymond was born in 1944 and after his birth Win and Ray made their way to Bentley, Alberta to await Gerald's return to Canada after the war. At war's end the young family was reunited and they lived on the family farm until 1955 at which time they moved into Sylvan Lake, then to Calgary in 1958 and ultimately to Lethbridge in 1960 where they made their permanent home.
Win was a registered nurses aide starting her career at the Colonel Belcher Veteran's Hospital in Calgary and then working for 23 years at the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital until her retirement in 1983.
Both Win and Gerald were active in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 of Lethbridge, where Win was an avid dart player. In later years she loved her card tournaments travelling to all parts of the province to participate.
Win was predeceased by Gerald in 1986 and is survived by son Raymond (Janet) Parkinson of Medicine Hat, AB and their children Kevin and Keith and great-grandchildren Robert, Madison, Liam and Marley and son James (Joanne) Parkinson of Lethbridge, AB and their children Matthew and Nicholas (Chantal).
The family extends their sincere appreciation for the dedication and care given by the staff and caregivers at St. Michael's Palliative Care Unit who offered Win and the family such wonderful caring support during her time there. These are selfless dedicated and amazing people and our family cannot thank them enough for the care and kindness they showed Win during her time with them.
At the request of Win, a private family interment will take place at the Mountain View Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers those that wish, memorial donations may be made to St. Michael's Palliative Care Unit, 1400 - 9 Ave South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 4V5.
