Nidia Angela Szucs (Alampi) passed away on Sunday, June 14th, on a lovely blue-sky, sun-filled morning at Chinook Regional Hospital, at the age of 84.
Born in the picturesque town of Coleman on September 23, 1941, to Catherine and Joseph, Nidia’s childhood was a setting and a story worthy of a chapter from Anne of Green Gables—filled with creeks, trails, adventures, and family.
From Montgomery to Rowling, there was always a bounce in Nidia’s step as she made her way to catch the bus to visit a nearby second-hand bookstore. Whatever treasure caught her eye on those shelves—whether it was a book for five cents, a dime, or even a quarter—was her everyday Narnia. She was the adult equivalent of a child sitting cross-legged in a bookstore, completely enthralled by a Marvel comic. There wasn't a bookstore that she didn't love.
And, truly wonderfully, she never complained about a book she didn’t like; perhaps, simply, there was no such book in her world or realm. Reading was a lifelong joy, a doorway into imagination, and a reflection of not only her gentle curiosity but also her vivacious yet gentle creative spirit.
The beauty of Nidia’s creativity extended beyond the written word. Her penmanship was as graceful as it was beautiful, and she carried that same artistry into her work as a mixed-media artist at the senior centre, where she explored watercolour, sketching, and Fandango. Through her art, she shared her unique way of seeing the world in colours, angles, and shades of wonder. A finely sketched feather was her symbol!
Nidia’s beloved husband, James, passed away on August 8, 1996. Together, they were something truly special—two peas in a pod, one might say, partners in every sense, and they always walked together in spirit, each and every day.
Nidia leaves behind her younger sister, Vivia, and her sons: Mark (Catherine and Melissa), and wife Kari; Jamie; and Brett (Jasmine, Lilie, Holli, and Joseph Alexander, who passed away on March 22, 2009).
On this earth, Nidia was kind, caring, generous, intelligent, and was very, very loved. She was quietly spiritual and carried a steady warmth that touched those around her. Her memory will remain with all who knew her until such time as we are together again. She is an awesome mother!
A Graveside Ceremony will be held at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Mountain View Cemetery, 1210 Scenic Dr S, Lethbridge, Alberta.
Cremation has been entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.
