JOYCE DOREEN LYCKMAN

Joyce Lyckman passed away peacefully at the age of 95 at St. Terese Villa in Lethbridge on February 8, 2018. Joyce was born in Tottenham district of London, England on November 10, 1922, the only child of George and Christine Eely. Her family moved to Bournemouth where Joyce grew up and married Edgar Langford of the Canadian Armed Forces on May 6, 1944. Joyce immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1945 living with her growing family first in Guelph, Ontario, then Lethbridge, Alberta and New Westminster, B.C. before returning to Lethbridge in 1968. Joyce met her second husband, Ray Lyckman at a “Golden Mile” dance and married him on November 15, 1980 and gained a second family. They were happily married residing in their home in Lethbridge, then Martha’s House and finally St. Therese Villa before they were finally separated by Ray’s passing on October 13, 2017.
In addition to raising four children Joyce was an active member of the Anglican church and its Women’s Auxiliary/Anglican Church Women. She supported the work of the Chinook Regional Hospital Auxiliary, IODE, Red Cross, Girl Guides and Blankets for Canada including knitting a wide variety of articles. She also participated and volunteered at the Lethbridge Senior Citizen’s Organization for many years. She was an avid square dancer with the “Golden Mile Dancers” entertaining with the group throughout southern Alberta and into Montana. She enjoyed baking gardening, jigsaw puzzles, reading, word games, (especially Scrabble and crossword puzzles) as well as walking in our forests and coulees where she could identify many plants and birds.
Joyce dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and always had a warm welcome for them in her home and heart. She spent many hours caring for her grandchildren in their younger years.
Joyce is survived by her four children: Geoffrey Langford, Virginia/Ginny Birss, Carolyn Langford and Kathy (Denton) Koenig; two stepchildren: Norma (Henry) Bosman and Warren Lyckman; nine grandchildren: Cory (Susan) Langford, Kyle (Kelly) Langford, Tina (Thabang) Maphoso, Shawn (Kate) Birss, Steve (Kindra) Birss, Dan (Diana) Koenig and Matthew (Nicole) Koenig, Laura Bosman (Jim Ling) and Diane Bosman (Paul Bognar); and fourteen great-grandchildren: Max, Maggie, Rocco and Ronan Langford, Zayne and Zeth Langford, Elijah and Grace Birss, Eva, Bella, Copeland and Arya Birss, Rachel and Amanda Ling
Donations in memory of Joyce may be made to St. Augustine’s Church or the charity of your choice.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, February 16, 2018 at the AUGUSTINE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411 – 11 Street S., Lethbridge, Alberta, with Canon James Robinson, officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
